Mattel Partners with OpenAI to Build AI-Powered Toys and Games

Mattel, the company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, has joined forces with OpenAI to create toys that use artificial intelligence. The toy maker announced the partnership recently, and plans to launch its first AI-powered product later this year.

The deal marks a major turning point for the traditional toy industry. Mattel will use OpenAI’s technology to develop new interactive toys and games based on its popular brands. This includes Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels cars, and UNO card games.

How the Partnership Works

The collaboration brings together Mattel’s 80 years of toy-making experience with OpenAI’s advanced AI capabilities. Mattel will also use ChatGPT Enterprise in its daily business operations to help design new products and improve how the company works.

Josh Silverman, Mattel’s chief franchise officer, said the partnership will help the company create new forms of play. “AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways,” he explained.

OpenAI’s chief operating officer Brad Lightcap said the partnership gives Mattel access to advanced AI tools. These tools will help boost productivity, creativity, and transformation across the company.

Safety and Privacy Focus

Both companies stress that safety comes first. Mattel said it will “bring the magic of AI to age-appropriate play experiences with an emphasis on innovation, privacy, and safety.” The company has experience creating products that delight children while keeping them safe.

The partnership comes at a time when many parents worry about AI in children’s toys. Privacy experts have raised concerns about smart toys collecting data from kids. Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), toy companies must be careful about what information they gather from children.

Business Impact

The partnership comes as Mattel faces challenges in its core toy business. The company recently pulled its annual forecast and said it would raise prices on some products due to higher costs. Last month, Mattel reported that first-quarter net sales grew 2% to $827 million.

Mattel has been working to expand beyond traditional toys. The company now produces movies, TV shows, and mobile games based on its brands. The recent Barbie movie was a huge success, showing how the company can turn its toy brands into entertainment properties.

Industry Trends

The toy industry has been slow to adopt AI technology compared to other sectors. Most AI toys on the market today are simple devices that can answer basic questions or play music. This partnership could set a new standard for how artificial intelligence is used in children’s products.

Other toy companies are watching this partnership closely. If Mattel’s AI toys succeed, it could spark similar partnerships across the industry.

Timeline and Expectations

Mattel expects to announce its first AI-powered product later this year. The company has not shared specific details about what the product will be or how it will work. However, sources suggest it will not be a simple ChatGPT integration but rather a carefully designed experience for children.

The partnership is described as “first-of-its-kind” and represents a significant step for both companies. For OpenAI, it marks its entry into the toy industry and products designed specifically for children. For Mattel, it represents a bet on technology to revive growth in its traditional toy business.

Both companies emphasize that this is a long-term partnership, not just a single product launch. They plan to work together on multiple products and experiences over time.
