Cisco is exploring artificial intelligence-powered solutions aimed at supporting smallholder farmers in Nigeria, part of a broader push to expand digital inclusion and technology adoption across the country.
What Cisco Is Actually Considering
Speaking at the 2026 World Business Chicago event, Cisco’s chief social impact and inclusion officer, Brian Tippens, said the company is assessing practical AI applications that would let farmers combine their existing local knowledge with data-driven insights rather than replace one with the other.
The tools under consideration include AI-enabled WhatsApp communities, geospatial mapping, and weather intelligence systems designed to support everyday farming decisions like planting timing, irrigation, and pest risk. Nothing here is a finished product yet. Cisco’s language is explicitly exploratory, meaning this is at the assessment stage rather than a confirmed rollout with dates or farmer numbers attached.
Why Nigeria, Why Now
The initiative sits inside the growing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States under the Commercial and Investment Partnership, a framework that prioritises the digital economy, agriculture, and infrastructure. Framing the AI exploration under this partnership gives Cisco’s interest a policy anchor rather than treating it as a standalone corporate social responsibility project.
It also lands in a market where AI-for-agriculture is not a new idea. Nigeria’s Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Ministry already launched the AgriConnect initiative with Huawei and MTN, distributing AI-loaded smart devices to over a thousand farmers in Ogun State. Cisco itself previously signed a memorandum of understanding with NITDA covering AI and smart agriculture, including interest in IoT and drone-based approaches to boost productivity toward the federal government’s food security targets.
Cisco’s newer exploration reads less like a first move into Nigerian agritech and more like a continuation of that earlier groundwork, this time centred specifically on tools smallholder farmers could use directly through channels like WhatsApp, rather than infrastructure-heavy deployments.
The Locally-Relevant Design Question
Industry analysts quoted alongside the announcement made a point worth underlining: AI adoption in emerging markets tends to succeed or fail based on how locally relevant the tools are, not on how sophisticated the underlying technology is. A geospatial mapping tool or weather model is only useful to a smallholder farmer if it works on the phone they already own, in a language they speak, and integrates with how they already make decisions.
This is where the WhatsApp-based approach stands out. Nigeria’s smallholder farmers are often resource-constrained and don’t always own smartphones capable of running dedicated apps, so building AI advisory tools around a messaging platform they already use daily lowers the barrier to actual adoption, something other Nigerian agritech players like Kitovu have also leaned into with local-language, field-partner-supported models.
Beyond Agriculture: Skills And Inclusion
The farming initiative is one piece of a wider Cisco social impact push in Nigeria. The company plans to expand digital skills training through the Cisco Networking Academy’s One Million Learners initiative, and Tippens also pointed to partnerships supporting people with disabilities, including tools built for people with visual impairments.
Cisco’s broader strategy also extends into conflict-affected regions, with Tippens specifically naming Borno State as an area of focus, linking digital skills and connectivity work to economic development in areas that have historically had less tech investment due to insecurity.
