Safaricom, in partnership with Opportunity International, has launched FarmerAI, a generative AI-powered chatbot designed to provide smallholder farmers in underserved Kenyan communities with real-time, localized farming insights.

This innovative AI tool delivers essential agricultural information on weather patterns, fertilizer use, pest control, and market prices, helping farmers make data-driven decisions. Unlike traditional solutions that rely on field agents, FarmerAI leverages SMS and WhatsApp via Safaricom’s DigiFarm service, ensuring wider accessibility.

Transforming Agriculture with AI-Powered Insights

By integrating AI with real-world farming data, FarmerAI helps farmers:

  • Access timely weather forecasts to optimize planting schedules.
  • Receive best practices for fertilizer application and soil management.
  • Get real-time pest and disease management updates to protect crops.
  • Stay informed about market prices, helping them maximize earnings.

According to Greg Nelson, Chief Technology Officer of Opportunity International:

“AI is already transforming the world around us, but the impact this technology can have on underserved communities is truly impactful. Above all, this partnership underscores Opportunity International’s and DigiFarm’s shared mission to uplift smallholder farmers.”

Pilot Program and Expansion Plans

FarmerAI is currently in a pilot phase, running through August 2024, with plans to enroll between 800 and 1,000 farmers across key agricultural regions by the end of the year.

Key Features of the Pilot Program:

  • Co-branded by Safaricom’s DigiFarm and Opportunity International to enhance farmer engagement.
  • Direct digital and in-person engagement with farmers, particularly in rural areas where connectivity challenges persist.
  • Aimed at bridging the digital divide by making AI-powered farming guidance accessible to smallholder farmers.

Kenya’s agriculture sector accounts for 22.4% of the country’s GDP, with 5.6 million smallholder farmers playing a vital role in food production, according to a 2022 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report.

Safaricom’s Vision for AI and Agriculture

Safaricom is committed to leveraging AI to empower communities and drive economic growth, aligning with its goal to become Africa’s leading technology company by 2030.

Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, emphasized the importance of AI-driven solutions for smallholder farmers:

“AI is a critical part of the present and the future. Our mission at Safaricom is to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. In line with this, we are committed to bringing technological solutions that will positively impact our customers and stakeholders.”

He added:

“One of the challenges that farmers face today is access to the right information at the right time, such as what to plant, when to plant, weather advisory, among others. This AI chatbot will allow smallholder farmers to access verifiable information on common questions to guide their decisions.”

Moving Ahead

The launch of FarmerAI marks a transformative step in AI-driven agriculture. By providing actionable insights through SMS and WhatsApp, Safaricom and Opportunity International are helping farmers increase their yields, improve sustainability, and boost profitability.

As FarmerAI expands, it has the potential to redefine digital agriculture in Kenya and beyond, ensuring smallholder farmers remain at the heart of the country’s agricultural economy.
