Apple has confirmed its most significant hardware lineup in years, introducing the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first-ever foldable device, the iPhone Duo, at a September event in Cupertino. The keynote, themed “Surprise and Shine,” marked the first major product launch under new CEO John Ternus, who opened proceedings by framing artificial intelligence and hardware design around what he called the most important areas: intelligence, performance, battery, and camera.

What’s New On The iPhone 18 Pro Lineup

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max both run on Apple’s new A20 Pro processor and feature a 48MP variable-aperture main camera with physical aperture blades, a first for the standard Pro line. Apple also gave the camera system a six laser-cut blade mechanism with a new rotor design and a custom lens, calling it the biggest camera jump for the Pro series yet.

Battery life sees a notable upgrade too. The iPhone 18 Pro can now run up to 34 hours of video playback, up from 31 hours, while the Pro Max stretches to 43 hours, up from 37. Apple describes this as its largest single-generation battery improvement. Charging speeds remain competitive, with the Pro models hitting the halfway mark in about 15 minutes on a wired charger.

Design-wise, the phones keep a familiar silhouette but arrive in fresh colourways, and the Dynamic Island has been made slimmer while now supporting up to three simultaneous Live Activities. Pricing starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max in the US market.

iPhone Duo Marks Apple’s Foldable Entry

The bigger story from the event is the iPhone Duo, Apple’s long-rumoured foldable phone. It opens into a 7.6-inch inner display from a 5.4-inch outer screen, runs the same A20 Pro chip as the new Pro models, and is built with a grade 5 titanium enclosure. The device also carries an IP68 rating with titanium frames sandwiched between Ceramic Shield layers front and back.

One standout feature that surprised reviewers is the front-facing camera setup. Apple has hidden the selfie camera underneath the inner display itself, giving the Duo an edge-to-edge screen with no visible notch or cutout, with the camera only becoming visible when actively in use.

The outer screen isn’t just a preview panel either. It runs dedicated features including Duo Preview, Kid Cue, and Duo FaceTime, all built around use cases where someone is standing in front of the camera rather than holding the phone.

Pricing, Availability, And What It Means For African Buyers

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model, with preorders opening October 16 and sales beginning October 23. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max open for preorder on September 12 and ship September 18 in more than 65 countries, with 20 additional markets following on September 25.

For African buyers, the rollout pattern that has become familiar with recent iPhone launches is likely to repeat: official Apple retail availability typically lags the initial wave, meaning early access across much of the continent will largely come through resellers, grey-market importers, and regional distributors rather than direct Apple channels. With the Duo priced near $2,000 before taxes and shipping, and the Pro models already sitting above $1,000, currency depreciation against the dollar across several African markets, including Nigeria, is expected to push retail prices for these devices well beyond their US sticker prices once they reach local shelves.

The foldable format itself also puts Apple in more direct competition with Samsung and Chinese brands like Huawei and Xiaomi, both of which unveiled competing foldables in the days ahead of Apple’s event. That rivalry could shape how aggressively local African retailers stock and price the Duo relative to established foldable alternatives already available in markets like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

Kenya Scraps Rule Forcing Firms to Buy a Code Per Network Kenya's Communications Authority has changed how short codes get allocated, moving from an operator-based system to a service-based one. A bank that previously needed separate codes for Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom customers can now use a single code across all of them. It applies to newly assigned codes, and sits alongside consultations on network equipment specifications and recycling inactive numbers. Bank of Ghana Clears dLocal to Operate Payments Locally dLocal has moved money in and out of Ghana since 2020 without being allowed to touch the rails directly. An Enhanced PSP licence from the Bank of Ghana changes that, letting it connect straight to banks and mobile money networks, onboard merchants and settle locally. It enters a market that processed GH¢4.54 trillion in mobile money last year, and where Flutterwave, Paystack and Fincra already hold the same licence.
