Ethiopia is equipping its national electricity network with artificial intelligence to predict and prevent power outages before they happen. The Ethiopian Electric Utility is systematically integrating AI and advanced digital technologies to build a highly resilient national power grid. Getu Geremew, the utility’s Chief Executive Officer, announced these upgrades in a recent interview with the Ethiopian News Agency.

How AI Predicts and Prevents Power Failures

The utility is deploying state-of-the-art digital technologies and artificial intelligence to forecast and diagnose sudden technical faults before they occur. The system detects weak points in the grid and corrects them before they escalate into blackouts. This proactive approach marks a significant shift from traditional reactive maintenance, where utility crews only responded after outages occurred.

The utility is executing targeted interventions to maximise the operational efficiency and capacity of high-voltage transmission lines and distribution substations. To decisively mitigate power interruptions, the institution is aggressively prioritising critical grid upgrades, comprehensive infrastructure rehabilitation and structured preventive maintenance frameworks.

Digital Tools Modernise Operations and Customer Service

Parallel to the physical engineering works, the utility is rolling out sweeping institutional transformation programmes. These programmes aim to enhance the agility, speed and overall quality of customer care interfaces. The utility is implementing highly innovative systems to upscale network capacity, re-engineer operational workflows and execute rigorous preventive maintenance schedules simultaneously.

A focused campaign is underway to strengthen internal technical capacities and completely restructure field maintenance crews into highly responsive units. These units receive digital tools and mobile access to real-time network data. This ensures consumers experience prompt and efficient service.

Major Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

The Ethiopian Electric Power company, which manages the national power grid, operates a clean energy network that includes 16 hydropower plants, one geothermal power station, one waste-to-energy facility and four wind power stations. As the share of clean energy rises, the power system faces greater uncertainty and multi-directional fluctuations across both power generation and load.

To address these challenges, EEP is actively adopting frontier technologies such as video-based inspection and AI-powered intelligent diagnosis. The company is partnering with Huawei to comprehensively upgrade its backbone communication network. This upgrade increases the network backbone bandwidth from 2.5 Gbit/s to 100 Gbit/s, enabling smart grid monitoring and real-time data transmission. This network upgrade represents a leap forward in communication technologies and supports EEP’s transformation from a traditional electric power service provider to an integrated energy and digital service provider.

International Support for the Digital Transition

The significant infrastructure modernisation projects are being financed through a strategic combination of state capital allocations and funding secured from international development partners. In March 2026, the Ethiopian Electric Utility, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their long-term cooperation in the field of digital innovations for the rapidly growing Ethiopian electricity distribution grid. This agreement builds on a partnership that began in 2022.

The strengthened partnership aims to combine innovative sensing technologies, advanced modelling methods and local capacity building to support Ethiopia’s transition toward a more resilient, data-driven and future-ready electricity infrastructure.

A Foundation for Industrial Growth

Reliable power is not only the foundation of industrial operations and improved livelihoods but also a critical enabler for attracting foreign investment, nurturing digital industries and advancing education and healthcare. By building a modern power grid, EEP is consolidating the foundation for sustainable industrialisation and inclusive growth in Ethiopia. These advancements provide Ethiopia with a solid digital infrastructure foundation to build a green, resilient and intelligent clean energy system.

The resulting improvements in customer support systems are already driving a visible improvement in the utility’s operational effectiveness. For Ethiopian households and businesses, this means fewer blackouts, faster response times and a more reliable electricity supply to power the country’s growing economy.
