EBRD and Microsoft Launch AI Initiative for African Startups

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Microsoft have signed a partnership to help African startups use artificial intelligence. The organisations signed a memorandum of understanding during the EBRD’s annual meetings in Amsterdam. The agreement creates a pilot programme focused on high-potential startups and small and medium-sized enterprises operating across Africa.

This collaboration combines the EBRD’s investment experience and knowledge of emerging markets with Microsoft’s AI platforms, technical expertise and international partner network. The programme aims to equip African startups with practical AI tools that improve productivity, competitiveness and long-term commercial growth.

What the Initiative Offers Startups

Participating companies will receive support in identifying practical ways to incorporate AI into their businesses. Microsoft will contribute its cloud and AI platforms, including development environments that allow startups to build and deploy machine learning models at scale. The EBRD will help identify high-potential startups and provide financial and advisory support to help them integrate AI into their operations.

The programme will focus on sectors where AI can have an immediate impact. These include financial services, agriculture, healthcare, logistics and education. These industries are particularly important in Africa, where efficiency gains and data-driven decision-making can significantly improve service delivery and economic outcomes.

Possible applications include automating administrative work, analysing customer information, improving decision-making and strengthening the delivery of products and services. The programme will not encourage startups to adopt AI simply because it has become popular. Instead, it will focus on uses that can produce measurable business improvements. This could include lowering operating costs, increasing staff productivity or making services easier to deliver at scale.

Building Skills and Promoting Responsible AI

Beyond technical tools, the initiative emphasises capacity building. Many African startups have innovative ideas but lack access to advanced AI training. Through workshops, mentorship programmes and developer resources, the partnership aims to strengthen local talent and build a sustainable ecosystem of AI-skilled professionals.

The programme will also introduce best practices to ensure that startups develop AI systems that are transparent, secure and aligned with global standards. As AI adoption grows, concerns around data privacy, ethical use and algorithmic bias are becoming increasingly important.

The Challenges African Startups Face

Many African startups have successfully tested products in individual markets but struggle when attempting to expand. Limited access to finance, weak infrastructure, fragmented regulations and shortages of specialised technical talent can prevent promising companies from progressing beyond their early stages.

AI may help some businesses overcome operational limitations, but access to technology alone will not guarantee growth. Startups will also need reliable data, appropriate cybersecurity measures, trained employees and clear plans for using the technology responsibly.

The EBRD-Microsoft initiative aims to address these gaps. The pilot is designed to strengthen participating companies’ commercial viability and ability to compete in domestic and international markets. It will also allow both organisations to assess which forms of technical and business support are most effective for African enterprises.

A Growing Focus on African AI

The partnership reflects growing interest among development institutions and global technology companies in helping African businesses move from limited AI experiments to practical commercial applications. The African AI market is projected to reach about $4.51 billion in 2025, with projections showing growth to around $16.53 billion by 2030.

Neither organisation has publicly announced the number of startups that will participate, the countries covered by the first phase or the financial value of the programme. Those details will be important in determining the initiative’s eventual reach.

For African entrepreneurs, this initiative represents an opportunity to leapfrog traditional stages of technological development. Instead of building infrastructure from scratch, startups can leverage existing global platforms to scale faster and compete more effectively in both local and international markets.

The true differentiator will be the ability to tailor AI solutions to specific African contexts, including local languages and unique challenges, rather than replicating Western models. If successful, the initiative could significantly accelerate AI adoption across African startups, helping to create more competitive businesses, drive job creation and strengthen the continent’s position in the global technology economy.
