Algeria just made life easier for its citizens living abroad. The government launched a digital service on June 24 that lets Algerians renew their biometric passports without visiting a consulate. This positions Algeria as the first African country to offer remote passport renewal for its diaspora.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior jointly announced the new platform. Citizens can now submit their renewal applications online through a secure portal available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Platform Lets Users Apply and Track Everything Online
The digital system works through a straightforward process. Users visit the official Ministry of Interior website, create a secure personal account, fill out their renewal application, and upload the required documents. The platform then lets them track their application status at every stage until they receive their new passport.
The system uses advanced cybersecurity measures to protect personal data and ensure the reliability of all electronic exchanges. The government built the platform with data protection and secure information transfers as top priorities.
Paris Hosts the First Phase of the Rollout
The service launched first at the Algerian Consulate General in Paris. This choice makes practical sense. France hosts one of the largest Algerian communities in the world, making it an ideal testing ground for the new system.
During the launch ceremony, officials demonstrated the process through a live video connection with the Paris consulate. They handed over the first remotely renewed biometric passport to an Algerian citizen living in France.
The government plans to expand the service gradually to other Algerian diplomatic missions and consulates worldwide. Authorities will evaluate the system’s performance and make adjustments before rolling it out more broadly.
More Than One Million Biometric Passports Already Renewed
The timing of this digital service responds to a real need. Many biometric passports issued about ten years ago are now expiring, creating a surge in renewal requests at Algerian consulates. Authorities report that more than one million biometric passports have already been renewed.
The online system aims to reduce the pressure on consular services and speed up application processing. For citizens, it eliminates the need to travel to a consulate, take time off work, or wait in long queues.
This Initiative Builds on Algeria’s Digital Push
This passport service represents one piece of a larger digital transformation effort across Algeria’s government. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has made digital modernisation a priority for public administration.
In November 2025, Algeria approved a draft law on digital trust and electronic transactions. That legislation introduced a national digital identification framework linked to the existing biometric identity card. The new passport renewal system fits within this broader strategy to digitise government services and strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty.
Algerians abroad already had access to some online consular services for tracking administrative document requests. The passport renewal platform adds a major new capability to that digital portfolio.
What Citizens Need to Know
The service is currently available only to Algerians registered with the Consulate General in Paris. Other consulates will join the system in later phases.
Users can access the platform through the Ministry of Interior’s official website. They need to create a secure personal space, submit their renewal request, upload the necessary supporting documents, and monitor their application’s progress online. The entire process happens remotely, with citizens only needing to collect their completed passport in person.
The government emphasises that this service reflects the state’s commitment to citizens wherever they live. For the Algerian diaspora spread across multiple continents, this digital upgrade turns a formerly time-consuming chore into a few clicks from home.
