Google AI Plus Is Free for Students in Nigeria: How to Register

Google adds free google AI plus

Google is offering eligible university and higher-education students in Nigeria 12 months of Google AI Plus at no cost.

The promotion gives students access to Google’s AI tools for studying, research, writing, productivity and creative work. This offer differs from the Google AI Pro student promotion that Google launched across several African countries in 2025.

For Nigerian students, the current promotion is for Google AI Plus. Google says the offer must be redeemed by December 31, 2026.

What Nigerian Students Get

Google AI Plus is currently available in Nigeria as one of Google’s AI subscription plans.

The plan includes 400GB of cloud storage across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, alongside enhanced access to Gemini. It also provides higher usage limits, access to Google’s Pro model and AI-powered features across Google’s ecosystem.

For students, these features can be useful for research, revision, writing assignments and organising study materials.

Google’s current AI plans also include tools designed to help students create multi-page reports and use Gemini Notebook for research and learning.

Who Is Eligible in Nigeria?

According to Google’s current student-offer terms, students must:

  • Be 16 years or older.
  • Be enrolled at a higher-education institution in a country where Google AI Plus is supported.
  • Have a personal Google Account.
  • Successfully verify their student status when requested.
  • Have a Google Payments account with an eligible payment method at sign-up.

Nigeria is currently listed among the countries where Google AI Plus is available.

There are also restrictions. For example, people with an active Google One subscription, people in a Google One family group and users with certain third-party Google One subscriptions may not qualify for the promotion.

How to Register in Nigeria

1. Go to the Google AI student offer

Start by visiting Google’s official student offer page:

Google AI Student Offer

Sign in using the personal Google Account you want to use with the subscription.

2. Start student verification

Google will require you to verify that you are currently enrolled at a higher-education institution.

The verification process may require your school email address or other information that confirms your student status. Google states that a valid school email address may be requested during verification.

3. Complete the verification

Enter the requested information and follow Google’s verification instructions.

If your institution or student information can be verified successfully, you can proceed with the offer.

4. Add a payment method

Google requires a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method when signing up for the promotion.

The important point is that the promotion itself is free for the 12-month offer period. The payment method is required because the subscription is set to renew after the promotional period unless it is cancelled.

5. Activate Google AI Plus

After completing verification and the sign-up process, the Google AI Plus benefits should be added to your Google Account.

You can then access the included AI features through Google’s supported products and services.

When Does the Free Period End?

The promotion provides 12 months of Google AI Plus at no charge from the date you redeem it.

The current offer expires on December 31, 2026, meaning eligible students need to claim it before that date.

For example, if a student activates the offer on September 1, 2026, the promotional period runs for 12 months from that activation date, subject to Google’s terms.

Be Careful About Automatic Renewal

The subscription does not remain free indefinitely.

Google’s terms state that when the promotional period ends, the payment method can automatically be charged the standard monthly subscription price unless the student cancels beforehand.

Students who only want the free year should therefore keep track of their renewal date.

What Nigerian Students Can Use It For

The subscription can be useful for several areas of academic work.

Students can use Gemini to understand difficult concepts, organise information, brainstorm ideas and improve drafts. Google’s AI tools can also help with research and productivity.

Google AI Plus also includes expanded access to Gemini and 400GB of storage, which can be useful for students who keep lecture materials, documents and other academic files in Google Drive.

However, students should verify important academic information against textbooks, lecture materials and reliable sources rather than relying entirely on AI-generated answers.
