Nigerian web hosting company GO54, formerly Whogohost, has been acquired by South African web company HOSTAFRICA. This deal brings together over 200,000 customers across Africa, making HOSTAFRICA one of the biggest web hosting providers on the continent.

HOSTAFRICA’s CEO, Michael Osterloh, said this move would help them improve their services and expand their reach in Nigeria and across Africa. He also assured GO54 customers that the transition will be smooth, with no disruption to their services.

In His words, “This strategic acquisition strengthens our position as the leading provider of web hosting and related services in Africa. We are excited to leverage GO54’s strong presence in Nigeria and its innovative solutions to enhance our offerings and better serve our growing customer base.”

GO54: From Nigerian Startup to Continental Force

GO54, founded in 2007 by Opeyemi Awoyemi while he was still a student at Obafemi Awolowo University, has grown to become a major player in Nigeria’s tech space. The company offers services like web hosting, cloud hosting, domain registration, and website design to over 130,000 customers.

The company has had a history of growth through acquisitions. GO54 previously acquired iHost Africa, and TheExpertHost in 2016 to expand its market and improve customer support. More recently, in 2023, GO54 acquired SendChamp, a cloud communications startup, further solidifying its position as a leader in customer support solutions.

A Smooth Transition for Customers

The acquisition promises uninterrupted service for GO54 customers. HOSTAFRICA has committed to a seamless transition while integrating GO54 into its operations. Customers can expect improved service offerings, backed by HOSTAFRICA’s expansive infrastructure.

The leadership transitions reflect this new era. Opeyemi Awoyemi, who has also co-founded Jobberman and AltSchool Africa, announced his resignation from GO54’s board following the acquisition. This marks his second exit as a founder and his last one focused solely on Nigeria.

With this acquisition, HOSTAFRICA has positioned itself as the go-to provider for web hosting and related services in Africa.

What This Means for Africa’s Web Hosting Industry

This merger solidifies the combined entity as a domain powerhouse, creating a near-monopoly in the African web hosting market. With a broader reach, increased resources, and enhanced customer solutions, HOSTAFRICA is poised to shape the future of web hosting across the continent.

As this chapter begins, it’s clear that African web hosting is entering a new era, one driven by innovation, collaboration, and growth.
