Snap Inc. has officially announced the return of its classic 2D-style Bitmoji, reintroducing a nostalgic design feature that many users have long requested. The announcement was made on 10 November 2025, introducing the new “Comic Bitmoji” feature as part of Snapchat Plus.

A Nostalgic Turn for Bitmoji

Bitmoji has been central to Snapchat’s identity for years, allowing users to express themselves through personalised avatars. In 2023, Snapchat shifted to 3D Bitmoji with more detailed graphics and deeper customisation. However, the update divided users, with many preferring the simplicity and charm of the original 2D avatars.

The reintroduction of the 2D style under the name “Comic Bitmoji” is a direct response to user demand. Thousands of users had called for a return to the classic look, describing it as more expressive and authentic to Snapchat’s early character.

What Comic Bitmoji Offers

The Comic Bitmoji brings back the flat, comic-inspired aesthetic of the old avatars while keeping the modern 3D system’s advanced customisation tools. Users can change hairstyles, outfits, and facial features, but the overall appearance now mimics the familiar 2D design.

The feature is exclusive to Snapchat Plus subscribers and will roll out gradually to users across regions. The company describes this blend as a way to combine nostalgia with innovation, letting users keep the best of both worlds.

An Emphasis on Personal Identity

The decision to revive classic Bitmoji isn’t just about aesthetics. It highlights Snapchat’s ongoing effort to balance evolution with user sentiment. As competition in the social media space intensifies, Snapchat is reinforcing one of its strongest assets, personal identity and self-expression.

By tying the new feature to its premium Snapchat Plus tier, the company also strengthens its subscription model, offering paying users more value while tapping into nostalgia as a powerful engagement tool.

Snapchat is expected to expand Comic Bitmoji access as user feedback rolls in. The move may also pave the way for future nostalgic updates, combining modern technology with features that defined the platform’s early success.

For now, the return of the 2D Bitmoji marks a small but meaningful nod to the past, a recognition that sometimes, the simplest designs remain the most personal.
