Meta Announces Premium Paid Features Coming to Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp

Meta plans to add paid features across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp in the coming months. The company confirmed the move on Monday, announcing tests for new premium subscriptions that will unlock exclusive tools while keeping core services free for all users.

The company told reporters that these paid plans will offer expanded AI capabilities, productivity tools, and creativity features. Each app will get its own unique set of premium options. Meta stressed that users can continue accessing Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp without paying anything.

The paid features through subscription tiers are completely separate from its existing Meta Verified service. The verified badge program targets content creators and businesses with features like 24-hour support and impersonation protection. These new subscriptions aim at everyday users who want more control over their social media experience.

The company will test different subscription bundles and gather user feedback before rolling out the final versions. Meta has not revealed pricing yet. However, the company already charges users in some regions for ad-free experiences.

Instagram premium features revealed

Some Instagram premium features have already been spotted in development. Tech researcher Alessandro Paluzzi found evidence that paid subscribers will get three main benefits. First, users can create unlimited audience lists to organise their followers better. Second, they can see which followers don’t follow them back. Third, subscribers can view someone’s Story without that person knowing.

These features address common user requests that free accounts currently cannot access. Meta believes regular Instagram users will pay for more control over their privacy and follower management.

The company plans to integrate Manus capabilities into its paid subscription offerings. Manus specialises in autonomous AI agents that can complete complex tasks with minimal user input. The technology can plan trips, create presentations, and handle research automatically.

Meta will take a two-part approach with Manus. The company will build Manus features into Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp for subscribers. At the same time, Meta will continue selling standalone Manus subscriptions directly to businesses.

WhatsApp and Facebook paid features

Meta has not disclosed specific paid features for WhatsApp and Facebook yet. The company said each app will get distinct subscription benefits tailored to how people use those platforms. Users will likely see announcements about WhatsApp and Facebook premium options during the testing phase in the coming months.

Industry observers expect WhatsApp might offer business communication tools or extended storage for paid users. Facebook subscriptions could include enhanced group management features or advanced content creation tools. Meta plans to add paid features gradually based on user response and feedback.

The company emphasised repeatedly that core Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp functions will remain free. Users can still post photos, send messages, and connect with friends without paying. Paid subscriptions only unlock additional features beyond the basic experience.

This approach mirrors how many mobile apps operate with freemium models. Users access basic functions at no cost, while premium features require payment. Meta generates most of its revenue from advertising but sees subscriptions as an important secondary income source.

Testing begins in the coming months

Meta will start testing these paid subscriptions soon, but has not announced exact dates. The company said it will listen to user feedback and adjust features based on community response. Different regions might see different subscription options as Meta experiments with various pricing and feature combinations.

Users should watch for announcements from Meta about when premium subscriptions become available in their areas. Early testers will likely see limited feature sets that expand over time. Meta’s approach suggests a cautious rollout rather than an immediate global launch of all paid features at once.
