Bolt Launches Family Profile Feature for Up to 9 Members in Nigeria

Bolt has introduced a new Family Profile feature in Nigeria that lets users manage and pay for rides on behalf of up to nine family members through a single account. This shared ride management system will simplify transportation coordination for Nigerian families.

How Bolt Family Profile Works

The Family Profile feature transforms how families handle ride-hailing by creating a centralized account system. Users can add up to nine people to their profile, including family members, friends, and close relatives. Each person maintains their individual Bolt account but connects to the main account holder’s payment system.

Account holders can set monthly spending limits for each family member and receive real-time notifications when rides start, end, or take unexpected routes. This setup eliminates the need for constant coordination through calls or messages that previously characterized ride booking for others.

Safety Features and Age Requirements

Bolt maintains strict safety protocols with the Family Profile feature. All added members must be at least 18 years old and possess verified Bolt accounts. The company explicitly prohibits booking rides for unaccompanied minors, citing legal and safety concerns.

The feature includes live location sharing, trip verification codes, and emergency assistance options. Users can monitor ongoing rides and contact drivers directly if needed, providing enhanced security for family members.

Target Users and Market Impact

According to Bolt’s internal data, 2% to 6% of rides on the platform are currently ordered for someone other than the account holder. This typically involves manual coordination and sharing of trip details, which the Family Profile aims to streamline.

Osi Oguah, Bolt’s Country Manager for Nigeria, explained the motivation behind the feature: “At Bolt, we want to make ride-hailing work for the way people actually move. Family Profile is a simple but powerful way to support others without needing to coordinate every trip.”

The feature particularly benefits parents, caregivers, and anyone supporting older relatives who may not regularly use smartphones or ride-hailing apps. Data shows ride-hail usage is growing fastest among older adults, but practical barriers like app complexity still limit adoption.

Financial Control and Monitoring

The Family Profile offers enhanced financial oversight for account holders. Users can monitor ride activity per member, set individual spending limits, and receive detailed reports on transportation expenses. This level of control helps families manage ride costs more effectively.

The system also provides real-time alerts for unusual activity, such as unexpected route changes or extended trip durations. Account holders can take immediate action if necessary, including contacting riders or drivers directly.

Platform Integration and Rollout

Users need to ensure their Bolt app is updated to access the new functionality. The feature works seamlessly with existing Bolt services and maintains all current safety protocols.

Individual family members can still request rides independently through their own Bolt accounts while the primary account holder maintains oversight and payment responsibility. This balance preserves personal autonomy while providing family coordination benefits.

Market Context and Competition

While Uber previously pioneered similar family account features in ride-hailing, Bolt is adapting the concept specifically for Nigerian market dynamics. Multi-generational households are common in Nigeria, and transportation responsibilities are often shared among family members.

The launch comes after Bolt reported a 42% drop in offline rides over the past three months, indicating users increasingly prefer digital tools for secure and transparent transportation. The Family Profile feature reinforces Bolt’s strategy to localize services for Nigerian users.

Technical Implementation

The Family Profile feature integrates with Bolt’s existing safety infrastructure, including trip monitoring by the company’s Safety Team. Users can share live location data with multiple family members simultaneously, creating a comprehensive safety network.

The system maintains separate user profiles while centralizing payment and oversight functions. This approach preserves individual privacy while enabling family coordination and financial control.

Future Expansion Plans

Bolt plans to expand the Family Profile feature to additional markets where family-oriented transportation coordination is common. The company continues investing in improved routing, mapping, and usability features to support the growing user base.

The Family Profile joins other recent Bolt updates focused on safety, convenience, and user empowerment. These include enhanced emergency features, better driver verification systems, and improved customer support tools.
