Airtel Africa Launches First Commercial Satellite-to-Mobile Service in DRC With Starlink

Airtel Africa partnership with Starlink

Airtel Africa has switched on Africa’s first commercial satellite-to-mobile service, unveiling the offering in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The launch, delivered in partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink, moves direct-to-device satellite connectivity out of pilot testing and into full commercial deployment for the first time on the continent.

How the Service Works

The service lets Airtel customers with compatible smartphones connect directly to Starlink’s satellite network in locations with no terrestrial mobile coverage, provided they have a clear view of the sky. No special equipment or separate satellite device is required.

To access the service, users need a compatible LTE Android smartphone, with Airtel Africa saying Apple devices will be supported in the future as the service expands. Customers can register through the MyAirtel App and receive a free 30-day introductory trial.

Who Stands to Benefit

The DRC’s terrain and infrastructure gaps make it a fitting testbed for direct-to-device satellite connectivity. The satellite connectivity is expected to be particularly useful for people and organisations operating in remote areas, including transport and logistics companies, humanitarian organisations, health workers, farmers, mining operations and communities located beyond existing terrestrial networks. It is also expected to provide an additional communications channel during emergencies, natural disasters and temporary disruptions to terrestrial networks.

Given ongoing instability in parts of eastern DRC and recurring public health emergencies, including Ebola response efforts in some provinces, a communications layer that doesn’t depend on ground infrastructure could prove operationally significant for aid groups and health workers well beyond its consumer appeal.

What It Means for the Continent’s Connectivity Gap

Africa remains home to some of the world’s largest populations still outside reliable mobile network coverage, particularly across rural and conflict-affected regions. Airtel Africa’s satellite-to-mobile launch signals a shift in how operators on the continent are approaching that gap: rather than waiting for tower infrastructure to catch up, they’re leaning on low-earth-orbit satellite constellations to leapfrog it entirely.

Airtel’s stated ambition to extend the service across its 14 sub-Saharan African markets suggests DRC is a proof point rather than an endpoint. If the model scales as planned, satellite-to-mobile connectivity could become a standard fallback layer across Airtel’s regional footprint over the next one to two years, with rival operators likely to explore similar direct-to-device partnerships of their own.

For now, the service’s limitation to light-data functions like SMS and WhatsApp means it complements rather than replaces terrestrial networks. But as a first commercial deployment of its kind in Africa, it marks a notable step in the race to close the continent’s connectivity divide.
