Hubtel Joins MoMo Fintech Lab Partners to Support Ghana’s Emerging Fintech Talent

Momo and Hubtel partnership

MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MMFL), the fintech subsidiary of MTN Ghana, has launched the maiden edition of the MoMo Fintech Lab, a talent-development initiative bringing together a broad coalition of financial services and technology players, including Hubtel, to identify and support Ghana’s next generation of fintech innovators.

What the Programme Involves

The Fintech Lab is designed to give developers, startups, students and industry players a structured path from idea to market-ready product. The MoMo FinTech Lab will provide selected applicants with intensive bootcamp training, followed by zonal hackathons where participants will test and refine their prototypes. Twelve outstanding teams will then progress to a mentorship phase.

Applications run through MMFL’s own platform. Interested applicants could submit their ideas through the MoMo App by completing an online application and selecting one of three regional zones: Accra, Kumasi or Tamale.

For participants whose solutions show commercial promise, MMFL has signalled a path beyond training. The MoMo Ltd CEO said his outfit would also work with participants whose ideas are scalable and bankable to explore opportunities to develop their solutions on the MoMo platform.

Hubtel’s Role Among a Wider Partner Network

Hubtel’s involvement sits within a larger ecosystem of supporting organisations rather than an exclusive tie-up. The launch brought together a broad network of partners from the financial services, technology, cybersecurity and digital innovation sectors, including Hubtel, Korba, AppNMobile, Zenith Bank, The Blu Penguin, Jumo, First National Bank, the Cyber Security Authority, the Data Protection Commission and the Bank of Ghana.

Hubtel’s presence is a natural fit given its longstanding footprint in Ghana’s mobile money infrastructure, including direct API integrations with MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo, and its recent recognition as MobileMoney LTD’s Overall Best Fintech Partner. Its participation positions it to offer mentorship, technical guidance or infrastructure access to teams building on the mobile money rails it already operates across.

Regulatory and Government Backing

The initiative carries explicit backing from Ghana’s central bank and communications ministry, framing it as a national talent-pipeline priority rather than a purely commercial MTN venture. The Head of Fintech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana, Owureku Asare, described the initiative as an important step towards developing the next generation of fintech leaders, saying the Bank of Ghana is supporting the programme because the development of fintech talent and innovation was a national priority. He added that Ghana had moved beyond merely expanding financial inclusion and must now focus on improving financial health through innovation and collaboration, noting that the central bank’s regulatory sandbox and other initiatives had created opportunities for innovators to test and develop new financial solutions.

Why It Matters for Ghana’s Fintech Sector

Ghana has positioned itself as one of Africa’s most active mobile money markets, and initiatives like the MoMo Fintech Lab reflect an effort to convert that transaction volume into a homegrown innovation pipeline rather than relying solely on imported fintech models. By pulling in established players such as Hubtel, Jumo, and First National Bank alongside regulators, the programme gives early-stage builders exposure to both technical mentorship and a plausible route to market through MMFL’s own platform.
