South Africa has taken a major step toward AI self-sufficiency with the launch of what its backers describe as the continent’s most powerful AI cloud. The project brings together South African neocloud provider Stratos Lab, global AI infrastructure firm ECOBLOX, and open-access data centre operator Digital Parks Africa in a partnership aimed at giving African businesses and developers local access to top-tier computing power.
Exascale Performance Built on Nvidia’s Latest Chips
The new infrastructure is designed to deliver 7.2 exaflops of computing performance, a scale the partners are calling sovereign, exascale-grade AI capacity for Africa. The buildout centres on more than 50 high-performance Nvidia B300 HGX GPU servers, carrying over 400 of Nvidia’s latest Blackwell Ultra GPUs. The servers are being supplied by Giga Computing, a Gigabyte Group company and ECOBLOX ecosystem partner, with eight GPUs packed into each unit.
The deployment was announced at the Activate AI conference in Cape Town, and the partners say the full stack is expected to be operational within three months. It will be hosted at Digital Parks Africa’s Samrand campus in Centurion, just north of Johannesburg.
How the Three Companies Divide the Work
Each partner is handling a distinct layer of the project. Stratos Lab operates as the cloud and compute services provider, drawing on its GPU cluster management expertise to deliver services ranging from bare-metal-as-a-service to full GPU-as-a-service and managed platform-as-a-service offerings. These will support high-performance AI workloads including model training, inferencing, and agent-as-a-service applications.
ECOBLOX, headquartered in Dubai, is handling systems integration and infrastructure deployment. The company brings its data centre infrastructure management and high-performance computing software stacks, along with prefabricated modular infrastructure designed for rapid, turnkey rollouts of AI and enterprise computing capacity.
Digital Parks Africa is providing the physical foundation: colocation space, power management, and carrier-neutral connectivity. The company’s leadership has pointed to the demands of ultra-dense AI workloads as requiring specialised environmental controls and resilient power infrastructure to keep the GPU clusters running securely and reliably.
A Growing Push for African AI Infrastructure
The launch adds to a broader pattern of infrastructure investment aimed at building out AI and high-performance computing capacity across Africa and the wider Middle East and Africa region. ECOBLOX in particular has been active on multiple fronts, including a separate partnership with chip designer Tenstorrent to expand AI and HPC offerings across the Middle East and Africa, as well as involvement in data centre projects elsewhere in the region.
For Nigerian and broader African tech ecosystems, the development signals growing momentum behind local AI infrastructure that could eventually reduce costs and latency for businesses currently dependent on cloud capacity based outside the continent. Whether this translates into broader access for African AI startups and developers will likely depend on pricing, availability, and how quickly the Centurion facility scales beyond its initial phase.
