Mozambique Launches AI Association to Drive National Tech Ecosystem

Mozambique AI announcement

Mozambique has launched the Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA) to help steer the growth of the country’s AI ecosystem, according to the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC).

A New Body With a Broad Mandate

AMIA’s leadership executive, headed by president Donald Dimas, was inaugurated in Maputo. INTIC described the body’s creation as a critical step toward building a unified technical platform linking government, academia, and the private sector.

Lourino Chemane, chairman of INTIC’s board of directors, said AMIA is expected to become a technical platform bringing together government, the private sector, academia, the technological community, and civil society, contributing to AI solutions tailored to Mozambique’s needs.

Timing Ties Back to the National AI Strategy

AMIA’s launch comes three months after Mozambique unveiled its draft National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, part of the country’s wider digital transformation agenda. INTIC has said AI is already shaping key local sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, and public administration, making a coordinating body like AMIA a natural next step in the policy rollout.

Government Frames AI Around Ethics and Data Governance

Chemane said the government is actively working to establish favourable conditions for digital transformation and the ethical deployment of emerging technologies. He added that data governance remains central to that roadmap, with a national Data Governance Policy and Strategy currently under development alongside the AI strategy itself.

Growth and Inclusion as the End Goal

INTIC said AI represents an immediate opportunity to accelerate Mozambique’s social and economic growth, improve public sector efficiency, and expand digital inclusion nationwide. With AMIA now formally in place, the association is positioned to serve as the connective layer between policymakers at INTIC and the wider ecosystem of AI developers, researchers, and businesses working to put that ambition into practice.
