Snapchat Launches Now Playing: Real-Time Spotify Sharing on Snap Map

Spotify rolls out now playing

Snapchat has rolled out a new feature that turns Snap Map into a live window into what your friends are listening to. Called Now Playing, the tool connects directly to Spotify and shows active listening activity to friends in real time, marking one of the platform’s biggest pushes yet into social music discovery.

How Now Playing Works

Users link their Spotify account through their Snapchat profile settings or directly from the map interface. Once connected, Snap Map displays the track a user is currently playing to their chosen audience. Friends can tap on any track to preview it, open it directly in Spotify, save it to their Liked Songs, or explore Spotlight videos that use the same sound.

The feature also extends beyond Snap Map into Spotlight, Snapchat’s short-form video product, and into Sound Pages, giving users several entry points to discover and save music shared by the people they follow.

Privacy Controls Built In

Snap has built several privacy layers into the rollout. Listening activity only shows what a user is playing right now, not their history or most recently played track. Sharing automatically pauses if a user hasn’t opened Snapchat within 24 hours, and it resumes once they reopen the app. Users can also manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, and they retain full control over who can see their activity.

Why Snap Is Betting on Music

Snap Map launched in 2017 as a location-sharing tool, letting friends see each other’s whereabouts and browse public Snaps from around the world. Over the years, the map has expanded well beyond location, adding local hotspots and activity suggestions. Now Playing pushes that evolution further, reframing the map as a space for shared interests rather than just shared coordinates.

Snapchat’s head of music framed the update as a way to deepen friendships through everyday listening habits, positioning music as a personal but easily shareable form of expression. With Snap Map reportedly used by more than 450 million people monthly, the update gives Snap a large built-in audience to test whether real-time listening data can meaningfully boost engagement.

Part of a Wider Industry Trend

Snapchat isn’t alone in merging social platforms with streaming activity. Instagram already lets users display their Spotify status through Notes, and TikTok has long allowed users to save and share songs discovered in videos. Spotify itself has been pushing further into social features, including its group-listening tool Jam and an in-app messaging feature that has grown significantly over the past year.

Snap’s decision to launch exclusively with Spotify, rather than a broader set of streaming partners, also stands out. Other major services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music are notably absent from the initial rollout, and Snap has not indicated whether integrations with those platforms are in development.

What’s Left Unanswered

While Snap has been clear about user-facing privacy controls, it has not detailed what happens to listening data once collected, how long it’s retained, or whether it could eventually feed into targeted advertising alongside the location data Snap Map already holds. These questions remain open as the feature rolls out.

Availability

Now Playing is live now in markets where both Snapchat and Spotify operate, with Canada expected to gain access soon. You can also read why Snapchat feels better on iOS than Android here.
