Kenya will start training its government workers in artificial intelligence (AI) by July 2025. This is a big step to make government services better and faster for the people.

The training program will teach government workers how to use AI tools. The goal is to help them work better and serve citizens more effectively. The program is a joint effort between three main groups:

  • State Department for Public Service
  • State Department for ICT & Digital Economy
  • Kenya School of Government (KSG)

Who Will Get Training?

The training will cover workers in different government departments:

  • Procurement officers
  • Human resources staff
  • Administrative services workers
  • Communications teams
  • Finance departments

Even top government officials like Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries will get special AI training. This ensures that leaders understand AI and support its use in government work.

How Will the Training Work?

The training will happen online through KSG’s eLearning platforms. Kenya has also set up a new Regional Centre of Competence in Digital and AI Skilling. This center will help deliver the training programs.

Each department will get training that fits their specific needs. For example, procurement officers will learn how AI can help with buying government supplies, while HR staff will learn how AI can help with hiring and managing workers.

Why is Kenya Doing This?

Kenya wants to become a leader in AI and digital technology in Africa. The country has a plan called the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) that focuses on digital growth.

Dr. Jane Imbunya, who leads Public Service and Human Capital, said the government is committed to making this training successful. She wants to make sure government workers can use AI tools to help citizens better.

The training is part of Kenya’s bigger plan to use smart technology in government. The country already has an e-Citizen platform that offers over 20,000 services online to nearly 14 million people each year.

What Will This Mean for Citizens?

When government workers know how to use AI, they can:

  • Process applications faster
  • Give more accurate information
  • Reduce waiting times for services
  • Make fewer mistakes
  • Serve more people efficiently

The government says this is not about replacing workers with machines. Instead, it’s about helping workers do their jobs better with AI tools.

Kenya’s Bigger AI Plans

Kenya recently launched its National AI Strategy for 2025-2030. This shows the country is serious about using AI to grow its economy and improve life for its people.

The country has also set up the Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling at KSG. This center will help train people from across Africa in AI skills.

Looking Ahead

The AI training program will have a monitoring system to track how well it works. This will help the government see if the training is making services better for citizens.

Kenya hopes this training will help the country prepare for the “fourth industrial revolution” – a time when AI and digital technology change how everything works.

The program shows Kenya’s commitment to using technology to build a better government that serves its people more effectively.
