inDrive has rolled out two new pickup features for riders in Johannesburg and Cape Town, making South Africa the first market in the world to receive the tools. The features, Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points, are designed to help passengers and drivers find each other more easily at the start of a trip, tackling one of the most common sources of delay and frustration in ride-hailing.
How the New Features Work
Panorama View embeds a real street-level image of a selected pickup point directly into the booking process. Instead of relying only on a map pin, passengers can tap their pickup location to access a 360-degree panoramic view of the exact meeting spot, whether that is a building entrance, a landmark or a street corner. Where street-level imagery is not yet available for an area, the panorama icon simply does not appear, and passengers fall back on the standard pickup map.
Recommended Pickup Points works quietly in the background, improving location accuracy before a driver is even assigned. It directs drivers toward points where passengers are more easily accessible, reducing the guesswork that often comes with vague addresses.
Solving a Familiar South African Problem
The rollout responds to a common challenge in South Africa, where passengers often describe their location using landmarks, petrol stations or well-known business names rather than precise street addresses. This can easily confuse drivers who are unfamiliar with a particular area. inDrive says clearer visual information paired with more accurate pickup suggestions should reduce passenger waiting times, cut down on unnecessary in-app messaging and help drivers spend less time circling city blocks searching for their rider.
Speaking on the launch, inDrive country representative Ashif Black said the start of a ride sets the tone for the entire journey, and that helping drivers and passengers find one another efficiently protects both driver earning time and passenger safety, particularly in situations where riders might otherwise be left waiting in less secure locations.
What This Could Mean for Other African Markets
Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points are currently live only in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with inDrive saying coverage will expand as street-level imagery becomes available in more areas. The company has not announced a timeline for bringing the features to other African markets.
That said, the choice to debut the tools in South Africa rather than any other country is notable given inDrive’s broader footprint on the continent. The platform already operates in major markets including Nigeria, where Lagos has seen strong adoption, as well as Kenya. Pickup confusion tied to informal addressing, landmark-based directions and inconsistent street signage is not unique to South African cities. It is a familiar pain point in Lagos and other fast-growing Nigerian cities as well, where similar naming conventions around bus stops, junctions and estates are commonly used to describe locations.
If the South African pilot proves successful in cutting wait times and reducing driver search time, it would not be surprising to see inDrive extend Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points to Nigeria and other African markets facing the same addressing challenges, especially as the company continues to lean on product investment to differentiate itself in a competitive ride-hailing landscape.
