Google Rolls Out Gemini-Powered Voice AI in Gmail, Docs and Keep

Google adds voice AI

Google has begun rolling out conversational AI voice features across Gmail, Docs and Keep, letting users search, draft and take notes using natural spoken commands instead of typing. The features, called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live, moved from beta into general availability this week for eligible Google AI subscribers.

What the Features Do

Gmail Live lets users hold a spoken conversation with their inbox rather than typing search queries. Users can ask questions like when a school event is happening or what a flight’s gate number is, and Gemini pulls the relevant details from emails, complete with an on-screen transcript and links back to the source messages. The feature supports follow-up questions without repeating context and can be interrupted mid-conversation to switch topics entirely.

Docs Live is positioned as a hands-free writing partner. Users describe what they want to write aloud, and Gemini generates a first draft, drawing information from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web where needed. The assistant shows a recap of gathered information before producing the document, and users can ask it to add specific details or adjust formatting through further voice commands.

Keep Live is built for capturing unstructured thoughts. It listens to what Google describes as spoken “brain dumps” and converts them into organised notes and lists, showing an inline preview of the generated content within seconds.

Rollout and Availability

Google first previewed these tools at its I/O conference in May 2026 and began beta testing Gmail Live in June. The full rollout started this week, though access varies by product and subscription tier. Gmail Live and Keep Live are available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, while Docs Live is limited to Pro and Ultra plans. Keep Live is currently restricted to Android, while Gmail Live and Docs Live are available on both Android and iOS. All three are currently limited to English, and Google says Workspace business customers will get access in a future rollout.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the launch in a post on X, describing the update as allowing users to search Gmail, organise notes in Keep, and create documents conversationally.

Part of a Broader Voice Push

The Gmail, Docs and Keep updates extend a pattern of voice-focused releases from Google this year. The company added cross-app dictation to its Mac application in April, introduced a filler-word-removing dictation tool called Rambler on its Pixel 11 smartphones, and rolled out the Gemini 3.5 Transcribe model for speech-to-text tasks in August.
