Cassava Technologies Boosts Africa Cloud Infrastructure With Azure ExpressRoute Metro Status in Johannesburg

Cassava Technologies has taken a significant step in strengthening Africa’s cloud infrastructure after its subsidiary, Africa Data Centres, was designated a Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Metro peering location in Johannesburg. The recognition makes Johannesburg the first ExpressRoute Metro site on the continent, placing it alongside a small group of global technology hubs that offer businesses a higher tier of cloud resilience and security.

What the designation means

Africa Data Centres’ JHB1 facility now serves as the second ExpressRoute Metro peering location within the Johannesburg area, joining the existing Teraco site. ExpressRoute Metro allows a single private connection to Microsoft Azure to run through two separate physical locations in the same metro area. This built-in redundancy means that a power failure, fibre cut, or equipment fault at one site does not sever an organisation’s link to Azure, since traffic can automatically route through the second facility.

The two peering locations connect into the South Africa North Azure region, which has hosted Microsoft’s cloud compute and storage services on the continent since 2019. Before this development, businesses relying on ExpressRoute in Johannesburg depended on a single site, leaving them exposed if that facility experienced disruption.

Why this matters for African cloud adoption

The timing lines up with a broader push across the continent to build out data centre capacity and improve cloud reliability as demand for AI, digital banking, and enterprise cloud services accelerates. For businesses operating mission-critical systems, from payment processors to telecom operators, the ability to design around a metro-level failure point rather than a single site adds a meaningful layer of protection that was previously unavailable locally.

Analysts following the space note that resilience upgrades like this one also carry cost and configuration implications. Organisations looking to take advantage of the dual site setup will need to plan their failover architecture carefully to ensure they are not simply paying for redundancy without actually eliminating single points of failure in their own systems.

For now, the Johannesburg designation sets a template that Cassava Technologies appears keen to expand elsewhere on the continent as African data centre operators race to match global standards for cloud reliability and security.
