South Sudan is investing in its digital future with a $9 million allocation for the design phase of its national fiber optic project. The country’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies and Postal Services approved this investment to address critical connectivity challenges facing the nation.
The South Sudanese government’s steering committee made this decision after extensive discussions about expanding internet access across the country. Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak, Undersecretary of Telecommunications, announced the budget approval following committee deliberations on the project’s second phase.
Project coordinator Abraham Mach confirmed that contract signings with selected companies and technical experts will occur in July 2025. These partnerships will focus on detailed design work and groundwork for the fiber optic network infrastructure.
“This step shall be followed by the signing of contracts with the companies and experts selected to design and lay down the country’s fiber optics,” Mach stated during the announcement in Juba.
Current Digital Connectivity Challenges
South Sudan faces significant digital infrastructure obstacles. The country has one of the world’s lowest internet penetration rates at just 12.1 percent. Only 1.36 million people out of 11.18 million citizens accessed the internet in early 2024, according to DataReportal.
