The Premier League has signed a partnership deal with Microsoft that will transform how 1.8 billion football fans worldwide engage with England’s top soccer league. The five-year agreement makes Microsoft the official cloud and AI partner for all Premier League digital platforms.

This deal brings artificial intelligence directly to fans through a new feature called the Premier League Companion. The AI assistant runs on Microsoft’s Copilot technology and pulls information from over 30 seasons of statistics, 300,000 articles, and 9,000 videos.

AI Assistant Changes Premier League App Experience

Fans can now access the Premier League Companion through the official mobile app and website. The AI tool answers questions about clubs, players, matches, and league history in real-time.

The system uses Azure OpenAI technology to provide personalized responses. Fans can ask about “great derby matches” or “iconic moments” from the league’s archive. They can also get updates on their favorite teams with questions like “Update me on Tottenham Hotspur” or “When are Manchester United playing next?”

Microsoft’s technology also summarizes the latest news and injury reports. The AI companion will expand throughout the upcoming season to include text and audio translation in multiple languages.

Fantasy Football Gets AI Support Later This Season

The partnership will enhance the Fantasy Premier League experience with AI-powered assistance. Microsoft’s technology will act as a personal assistant manager to help fans make better decisions for their fantasy teams.

This feature builds on the league’s existing digital infrastructure. The Premier League currently operates in 189 countries and reaches 900 million homes globally, making it the world’s most-watched football competition.

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, explained the partnership’s goals: “This partnership will help us engage with fans in new ways from personalized content to real-time match insights”.

Microsoft Azure Powers Backend Infrastructure Migration

Beyond fan-facing features, the Premier League is moving its core technology infrastructure to Microsoft Azure. This migration replaces a previous contract with Oracle and provides the foundation for future AI integration.

The cloud platform will enable faster innovation and seamless integration of AI services across the league’s digital ecosystem. Microsoft 365, Power Platform, and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations will also modernize the league’s internal operations.

Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the technical scope: “By leveraging our secure cloud and AI technologies including Azure AI Foundry Services with Azure OpenAI, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Dynamics 365 we will transform how football is experienced, delivered and managed on and off the field”.

Enhanced Match Analysis and Real-Time Data Integration

The partnership includes advanced match analysis capabilities. Microsoft Azure AI Foundry services will power real-time data overlays during live matches and enhance post-match analysis.

Broadcasters and fans will gain access to deeper insights through enhanced in-game statistics and richer content. The technology will create personalized video packages and multi-language content using generative AI.

These features will make matches more interactive and provide viewers with detailed performance data as games unfold.

Implementation Timeline and Fan Access

The Premier League Companion launched on July 1, 2025, just 47 days before the new season begins on August 15. Fans can access the AI assistant by clicking the Copilot icon on the website or tapping the Microsoft Copilot icon in the mobile app.

Enhanced features will roll out throughout the season. Fantasy Premier League AI assistance will arrive later in the campaign, providing personalized recommendations for team selection and transfers.

The partnership sets a new standard for sports technology integration. Microsoft and the Premier League plans to build one of the most advanced media, data, and AI platforms in global sports.

Financial terms of the five-year agreement were not disclosed, but the deal positions Microsoft as a key technology partner for the world’s most popular football league.

Sports Industry Embraces AI Technology

The Premier League deal follows similar AI partnerships across professional sports. Spain’s LaLiga already uses artificial intelligence for match analysis and media production. Individual clubs have also adopted AI-driven fan engagement tools.

Microsoft has established partnerships with other major sports organizations, including the NBA, which uses Azure for security and scalability improvements. The NBA also built a direct-to-consumer platform on Microsoft Azure to deliver personalized content to basketball fans.

The Premier League partnership represents one of the most comprehensive AI integrations in global sports. The deal combines fan engagement, operational efficiency, and broadcast enhancement in a single technology platform.
