OpenAI expects ChatGPT to reach 700 million weekly active users this week. The projection shows the AI chatbot continues its rapid climb toward becoming one of the world’s most-used digital platforms.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of ChatGPT, shared the forecast on X. He said usage jumped four times higher than last year’s figures. The app served 500 million weekly users at the end of March, meaning it added 200 million users in four months.

This week, ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly active users — up from 500M at the end of March and 4× since last year. Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and…

Enterprise Adoption Fuels Revenue Jump

The expected user milestone comes alongside strong financial performance. OpenAI doubled its revenue in the first seven months of 2025, reaching $12 billion annually. The company now brings in roughly $1 billion per month, according to industry reports.

Business customers drive much of this growth. COO Brad Lightcap announced that 5 million companies now pay for ChatGPT services. This number jumped from 3 million paying business users in June, showing rapid enterprise adoption.

Corporate clients use ChatGPT for customer support, content creation, and data analysis. The business version offers enhanced security, admin controls, and priority access that large organizations need. Companies pay $25 per user monthly, with discounts for bigger teams.

Image Creation Tool Drives User Engagement

ChatGPT’s popularity surged after OpenAI launched upgraded image generation in March. The feature uses the GPT-4 model to create photos, drawings, and graphics from text descriptions. Within days of launch, over 130 million users created more than 700 million images.

People use the image tool for social media posts, presentations, and creative projects. The visual capability expanded ChatGPT beyond text conversations, making it useful for more tasks. This helped attract users who previously found AI chatbots too limited.

Sensor Tower data shows people spend an average of 16 minutes daily on ChatGPT. Users access the app more than 12 days per month on average. Only Google and X see higher monthly engagement among mobile applications.

ChatGPT Dominates AI Chatbot Competition

The projected user numbers cement ChatGPT’s market leadership. Current data shows it holds 82.65% of the global AI chatbot market share. Perplexity comes second with 8.03%, while Microsoft Copilot captures 3.64% of users.

Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude trail further behind despite heavy investment from their parent companies. The numbers show ChatGPT maintained its lead even as tech giants launched competing AI assistants throughout 2024 and 2025.

Enterprise customers particularly favor ChatGPT over alternatives. Ramp’s spending data shows 35% of large companies use ChatGPT for business tasks. This adoption rate climbed from 18.9% in January and 28% in March 2025, showing accelerating corporate interest.

Monthly Revenue Hits $1 Billion as Paid Users Grow

OpenAI’s financial performance exceeded most analyst expectations. The company projects $13 billion in annual revenue by year-end, with some estimates reaching $20 billion. Recent funding rounds valued OpenAI at $300 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable private companies.

Revenue per user increased as more people chose paid subscriptions. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly and offers faster responses, priority access during peak times, and advanced features. The subscription model helps OpenAI reduce dependence on advertising or data sales.

The company reinvests revenue into AI research and computing infrastructure. Training advanced AI models requires massive amounts of processing power, which creates high operating costs. However, revenue growth currently covers expansion needs and research spending.

GPT-5 Launch Approaches with Advanced Reasoning

OpenAI prepares to release GPT-5 with improved problem-solving abilities. The new model should handle complex math, coding, and logical reasoning better than current versions. Early testing shows significant improvements in areas where previous models struggled.

The company also develops specialized business tools beyond the main ChatGPT interface. Features include automated data analysis, document processing, and workflow integration. These enterprise-focused additions could attract more corporate customers and boost revenue further.

International expansion remains a priority as OpenAI launches ChatGPT in additional countries. South Korea emerged as a key growth market with high adoption rates among both businesses and consumers. The company plans similar expansions across Asia and Europe.

AI Industry Faces Growing Scrutiny

ChatGPT’s growth comes as regulators examine AI companies more closely. Governments worry about job displacement, data privacy, and AI safety as these tools become more powerful. OpenAI works with policymakers to address concerns while maintaining innovation pace.

The company faces competition not just from other AI startups but from Big Tech firms with deeper pockets. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta all invest billions in AI research and products. However, ChatGPT’s early market entry and user loyalty provide advantages.

OpenAI’s success also attracts talent from across the tech industry. The company hired researchers from Google, Facebook, and other leading AI labs. This brain drain helps OpenAI maintain its technical edge but creates tensions with competitors.

The projected 700 million user milestone puts ChatGPT among the world’s most-used digital services. Only platforms like Google Search, YouTube, and major social networks serve more people weekly. For a product launched less than three years ago, this growth rate appears unprecedented in tech history.
