OpenAI Launches App Store for Developers: Submissions Now Open

ChatGPT app submissions are now open for developers worldwide, as OpenAI launches its much-anticipated app directory that transforms the AI chatbot into a full-scale platform. This gives third-party developers direct access to ChatGPT’s massive user base of over 800 million weekly active users.

Developers can submit their applications for review and publication through the new app submission system. The company simultaneously launched an integrated app directory accessible directly from ChatGPT’s interface and at chatgpt.com/apps.

This development expands beyond the initial pilot program that featured only seven major partners including Booking.com, Canva, and Spotify. Now, any verified developer can build and submit applications for the platform.

ChatGPT App Submissions Transform AI Chatbot Into Platform

The ChatGPT app submissions process operates through OpenAI’s developer platform, where creators can track their approval status in real-time. Each submission undergoes a comprehensive review to ensure compliance with OpenAI’s safety and quality standards before reaching users.

Approved applications will begin rolling out to users starting in early 2025, with the first batch launching gradually throughout the new year. The app directory features both search functionality and curated recommendations, making discovery seamless for users.

Developers can trigger their apps during conversations through @mentions or selection from the tools menu. OpenAI also experiments with automatic app suggestions based on conversation context and user preferences.

ChatGPT App Submissions Require Apps SDK Integration

The Apps SDK, currently in beta, serves as the foundation for all ChatGPT app submissions. This framework enables developers to create chat-native experiences that bring real-world functionality directly into conversations.

Built on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), the SDK allows apps to fetch real-time data, trigger external actions, and render interactive interfaces without breaking the conversational flow. Apps can display as inline cards, full-screen views, or picture-in-picture modes depending on their function.

The strongest applications focus on completing specific workflows that naturally begin in conversation or enable entirely new AI-native experiences within ChatGPT.

Monetisation Options Limited for ChatGPT App Submissions

Current monetisation rules for ChatGPT app submissions restrict developers to linking out for physical goods purchases only. Digital goods, subscriptions, and in-app services remain prohibited during this early phase.

OpenAI plans to explore additional monetisation pathways over time, including digital commerce capabilities. However, the company has not specified timelines for these expanded options.

This approach differs significantly from traditional app stores, where digital transactions form the primary revenue stream. Developers must currently rely on external website conversions to generate income from their ChatGPT integrations.

App Directory Competes With Existing GPT Store

The new app directory operates alongside OpenAI’s existing GPT Store, launched in early 2024. However, the ChatGPT app submissions system offers significantly more interactive capabilities than custom GPTs.

While GPTs primarily provide text-based experiences, submitted apps can include interactive buttons, maps, sliders, and other dynamic elements. This enhanced functionality positions the app directory as a more robust development platform.

The GPT Store continues operating independently, giving developers two distinct pathways for reaching ChatGPT users. However, the app directory’s superior interactive capabilities make it the preferred choice for complex applications.

Safety Requirements for ChatGPT App Submissions

All ChatGPT app submissions must comply with strict safety and privacy guidelines. Applications must be suitable for general audiences, including teenagers, and cannot contain adult content or inappropriate material.

Developers must provide clear privacy policies and support contact information with every submission. Apps cannot request unnecessary data and must minimise information collection to essential functions only.

OpenAI discloses data sharing details when users connect to new apps, ensuring transparency about third-party access. Users maintain full control and can disconnect apps instantly, immediately revoking access permissions.

Developer Response to ChatGPT App Submissions Launch

The developer community has shown strong interest in ChatGPT app submissions since the announcement. OpenAI plans to host a public webinar on January 21, 2026, where engineers will demonstrate the submission process using real-world examples.

Major software companies have already expanded their presence beyond the initial pilot program. Adobe Photoshop, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, and Stripe now offer ChatGPT integrations, demonstrating enterprise confidence in the platform.

Solo developers and large enterprises alike can participate in the submission process, provided they meet verification requirements and quality standards. This inclusive approach aims to foster a diverse ecosystem of applications.
