MTN Nigeria has introduced FlyX, a new outdoor fixed wireless broadband solution designed to deliver high-speed internet to homes and small businesses in areas where fibre infrastructure has not yet reached.
How FlyX Works
FlyX uses an Outdoor Unit (ODU) that is professionally installed outside a customer’s premises to capture the strongest available 4G or 5G signal. The Outdoor Unit works alongside indoor equipment to capture stronger 4G and 5G signals, providing high-speed internet access in locations where indoor reception may be weak. The ODU connects to an indoor unit that then distributes stable Wi-Fi throughout the home or business.
Installation is handled entirely by MTN-certified technicians, who mount the outdoor unit at the point of strongest signal reception before linking it to the indoor router. Customers order the service online or through an authorised MTN store, after which an installer schedules a home visit to complete setup.
Pricing and Offer
MTN is positioning FlyX as an affordable entry point into unlimited home broadband. The acquisition offer starts at 30,000 naira and includes unlimited data at speeds of up to 100Mbps, with no fair usage policy restricting monthly consumption. The package also comes with a free router and a complimentary power bank to keep the connection running during power outages. MTN says the service is available nationwide through its stores and online platform.
Why MTN Is Betting on Wireless-First Broadband
The significance of FlyX lies in its use of wireless infrastructure to overcome one of the major limitations of fixed broadband expansion: the cost and complexity of extending physical fibre networks to every household and business. Rather than waiting years for fibre cables to reach a neighbourhood, MTN can deploy an outdoor unit almost immediately, provided the location has strong network coverage.
Egerton Idehen, MTN Nigeria’s chief broadband officer, described FlyX as a way of using the company’s network strength to rethink broadband delivery, calling it faster to deploy, easier to access, and more responsive to the needs of Nigerians, while helping bridge critical gaps in areas where fibre is not yet available.
What It Means for Nigerian Households
For many Nigerians in areas where fibre rollout remains slow or economically unviable, FlyX offers a middle ground between traditional mobile data plans and full fibre installation. It gives small businesses and households a way to get stable, high-volume internet access without depending on cable-laying timelines that can stretch on for years, particularly in newer or less-dense estates where MTN has not yet extended physical fibre lines.
