The vibrant city of Lagos, known as a hub for innovation and creativity, hosted Lagos Creates, an initiative to empower Creative Talent in Lagos. Spearheaded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and supported by Kosher Ideas. The event celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of creative talent trained under the program while laying the foundation for Lagos as a global creative hub. The Governor was ably represented by key officials from his administration, underscoring his commitment to the development of the creative economy.

The conference brought together creators, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss and celebrate Lagos’ rising influence in the digital creative economy. With a theme focused on “Lagos as a Global Creative Hub: Opportunities, Challenges, and Vision,” the event showcased Lagos State’s dedication to nurturing young talent and empowering them to thrive in the digital economy.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Vision

In a statement delivered on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism Mrs. Oloruntoyin Atekoja, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of empowering young creatives as part of his administration’s broader vision for Lagos’ growth and development.

“Lagos Creates was born out of a vision to position Lagos as the creative capital of Africa. We are committed to equipping young people with the skills and resources they need to thrive in the digital economy,” the Governor’s representative stated. “This program is not just about learning; it is about creating opportunities for collaboration, growth, and transformation.

He went on to commend the graduates for their dedication and resilience, noting their potential to transform Lagos and contribute to the creative economy on a global scale. Also in attendance was Mr Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner, Ministry of Information and Strategy.

A Groundbreaking Initiative

Lagos Creates was designed to empower young creators by providing them with access to tools, training, and industry connections. The program featured a series of masterclasses, workshops, and mentoring sessions, all led by seasoned experts in the creative space. The conference, held at iconic venues across Lagos, served as the perfect stage to showcase the talent and ideas of the program’s graduates.

The event featured panel discussions, with notable industry leaders like AA Presley as the moderator, alongside panelists such as Martha Ehinome, Elozonam, and Serah Donald. They delved into the opportunities and challenges of positioning Lagos as a global creative hub and the pathways for growth in the creative sector.

One of the event’s highlights was the recognition of the first cohort of Lagos Creates graduates, whose innovative projects and ideas captured the potential of the program.

“Each graduate of Lagos Creates has demonstrated creativity, dedication, and resilience. Beyond the skills they have gained, they have become part of a thriving community of like-minded individuals passionate about making an impact in Lagos and beyond,” the Governor’s representative added.

Transforming Lagos into a Global Creative Hub

The conference was a melting pot of creativity, featuring insights from experienced creators and thought leaders. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, explored industry trends, and connected with peers to form meaningful collaborations.

“The vision behind Lagos Creates is to not only foster talent but also build an ecosystem that attracts global attention and investment,” said a program representative. “By backing the creative economy, Lagos is blazing a trail for other African cities to follow.”

The Lagos State Government’s backing of Lagos Creates is a testament to its commitment to fostering innovation and creativity. By supporting this initiative, Governor Sanwo-Olu is ensuring that the creative economy becomes a cornerstone of Lagos’ future.

Looking Ahead

The success of Lagos Creates has set a new standard for government-backed initiatives in Africa’s creative economy. With its sights set on global recognition, Lagos is poised to become a beacon for creators, investors, and industry leaders across the continent and beyond.

In his concluding remarks delivered by his representative, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated: “This is just the beginning. Lagos Creates represents the future of what is possible when we invest in our young people and empower them to lead the way. I look forward to seeing the incredible impact they will have.”

As the graduates of Lagos Creates embark on their journeys, they carry with them the skills, confidence, and vision to make waves in the creative industry—solidifying Lagos’ place on the global map as Africa’s creative capital.
