February 2025 has been a landmark month for Flutterwave. Africa’s leading payments technology company was recognized for excellence in Cross-Border Payments at the 2025 Africa Tech Summit (ATS) Awards, held in Nairobi, Kenya. This prestigious award reinforces Flutterwave’s position as the leading force in financial innovation, connecting Africa to global markets with seamless payment solutions.

At the awards ceremony, Saruni Maina, AVP, Stablecoins Segment at Flutterwave, received the award on behalf of the company. The ATS Awards celebrate Africa’s most impactful tech-driven solutions, honoring businesses that drive digital transformation and solve critical challenges across the continent. This accolade adds to Flutterwave’s impressive streak of wins, which in 2024 included:

  • Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Company for Europe, Middle East, and Africa”
  • “Financial Services Infrastructure Innovation Award” at the International Financial Inclusion Conference
  • “Fintech of the Year” at the Africa Banker Awards

The recognition comes as Flutterwave continues to expand its footprint, securing over 30 new Money Transmitter Licenses (MTLs) in the U.S., expanding into 30+ countries, and partnering with global financial institutions like American Express to enhance payment accessibility across African markets.

Revolutionizing HR and Payroll Payments: Flutterwave x Workpay

At the heart of Flutterwave’s success is its ability to power businesses across various industries—including the HR and payroll sector. A prime example of this impact is Workpay, a company that has leveraged Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure to scale its operations and revolutionize payroll and HR management across Africa.

“Working with Flutterwave has been transformative for Workpay. Their seamless and efficient payment processing solutions have enabled us to scale rapidly and serve our clients better across Africa,” said Jackson Kibigo, CFO of Workpay.

The Challenge: Scaling Payroll Operations Across Africa

As Workpay expanded beyond Kenya, its team quickly faced the complexities of cross-border payroll operations:

  • High transaction fees on salary disbursements across multiple African countries
  • Currency conversion issues slowing down payments
  • Delays in processing payroll transactions due to fragmented financial infrastructure

To scale effectively, Workpay needed a payment partner that understood Africa’s financial landscape and could navigate these challenges seamlessly.

The Solution: Flutterwave’s Cross-Border Payment Power

Since partnering with Flutterwave in 2020, Workpay has experienced a 200%+ annual increase in payment volume, leveraging Flutterwave’s advanced payment technologies, including:

  • Fintech-As-A-Service (FAAS): Automating financial processes like payroll and invoicing.
  • Collections: Seamlessly collecting payments from clients via cards, mobile money, bank transfers, and alternative channels.
  • Payouts: Ensuring quick salary disbursements and employee reimbursements across multiple countries.
  • Treasury Services: Helping Workpay manage liquidity, foreign exchange, and financial transactions efficiently.

By leveraging these tools, Workpay now processes cross-border payments up to 10 times faster than the industry average, ensuring businesses can pay employees promptly, regardless of location or payment channel.

The Future of Payments & HR Innovation in Africa

Flutterwave’s impact extends beyond Workpay. The company’s cross-border payment solutions are enabling thousands of businesses to scale efficiently and tap into global markets.

“We’ve made a promise: powering seamless, secure, and scalable payments so enterprises can focus on growth across and beyond the continent. Workpay is another testament to our unwavering commitment to this mission,” said Olugbenga Agboola, CEO of Flutterwave.

Scaling to New Markets

While Workpay initially focused on East Africa, the company is now expanding into Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa, and other key markets. With Flutterwave’s extensive payment reach across 34 African countries, the two companies are well-positioned to drive the next phase of Africa’s payroll transformation.

This collaboration is more than just payments—it’s about trust, reliability, and building a stronger financial ecosystem for African businesses.

As Africa’s digital economy continues to grow, businesses looking to scale across the continent need reliable payment partners. Flutterwave is leading this revolution—whether in payroll, e-commerce, remittances, or cross-border transactions.
