Who Really Benefits From Your Latest Processor?

Open any processor announcement from the past two years and count how many times you see “AI acceleration,” “neural processing unit,” or “machine learning performance.” Now count how many times you see “faster web browsing” or “better spreadsheet performance.” The ratio tells you everything you need to know about who chip makers are designing for, and it isn’t you.

The Transistor Budget Redistribution

Every processor has a finite number of transistors. How engineers allocate those transistors reveals their priorities. Traditionally, those budgets went toward things users directly experienced: faster cores, better graphics, improved power efficiency for battery life.

Now, massive chunks of that silicon real estate go to dedicated AI accelerators. These are specialised circuits designed exclusively for neural network operations. Apple’s M4 chip dedicates substantial die space to its Neural Engine. Intel’s latest chips feature built-in AI acceleration. AMD, Qualcomm, everyone, they’re all doing the same thing.

The cost? Those transistors could have made your actual applications faster. They could have improved battery life. They could have enhanced the graphics you see while gaming or video editing. Instead, they’re sitting idle for most users, waiting to accelerate AI workloads that may never arrive.

When Performance Metrics Become Meaningless

Chip makers now tout “40 trillion operations per second for AI workloads” while burying the fact that single-threaded performance (what makes your everyday apps feel snappy) has barely budged. They’ve optimised for benchmarks that don’t reflect how most people use computers.

Your email doesn’t load faster because your laptop can run neural networks efficiently. Your video calls don’t improve because an NPU is sitting unused. Your documents don’t open quicker because the chip can handle transformer models.

The performance gains that matter to users (application launch times, responsiveness, smooth multitasking) have been deprioritised in favour of capabilities most people will never use.

The Software That Isn’t There Yet

The justification from chip makers is always future-looking: “Applications will need this.” But that future remains persistently distant. Most AI features in consumer software are still cloud-based. When you use AI in your photo editor or writing assistant, that processing typically happens on a server somewhere, not on your expensive new processor.

The local AI revolution keeps getting promised but never quite materialises in ways that justify the hardware investment. Sure, some features run on-device now. But do these incremental improvements justify dedicating 30% of your processor’s capabilities to AI acceleration?

The Real Beneficiary

Who actually benefits from AI-optimised processors? Not consumers running productivity software. Not gamers. Not even most creative professionals.

The beneficiaries are companies building AI products and services. They want to offload processing from expensive cloud infrastructure to your device. Every AI operation that runs locally instead of on their servers saves them money. Your processor’s AI capabilities aren’t there to help you, they’re there to reduce their costs while maintaining the illusion that you’re getting cutting-edge technology.

What We’re Not Getting

While engineers focus on AI acceleration, other improvements stall. Battery life gains have plateaued. Memory bandwidth improvements have slowed. Support for older instruction sets gets deprecated. Compatibility sometimes suffers. And prices? They keep climbing, with the AI features used as justification for premium pricing.

We’re paying more for capabilities we don’t use, while progress in areas we actually care about slows down. It’s a raw deal dressed up in futuristic marketing language.

The Uncomfortable Question

If you removed all the AI-specific hardware from modern processors and reallocated those transistors to general-purpose performance, battery efficiency, or even just cost reduction, would you notice? For most users, the honest answer is no, or they might even prefer it.

But that chip wouldn’t generate exciting press releases. It wouldn’t let companies claim they’re “AI-ready” or “built for the future.” It would just be a processor optimised for what people actually do with their computers.

Where This Leads

As more silicon gets dedicated to AI workloads, we’re creating computers optimised for theoretical futures rather than present realities. The irony is that in the rush to build machines intelligent enough to predict what we need, we’ve built machines that ignore what we actually want.

Your next processor will likely have even more AI capabilities you won’t use, and even fewer improvements to the performance you’ll actually notice.
