Africa Telecom Rankings 2026 Show MTN Far Ahead of Rivals

In this story

Africa’s telecom industry now has no single scoreboard. Rankings by customer numbers, brand strength, growth and network quality produce different winners, and together they show an industry that is expanding but unevenly.

Who Has the Most Customers

MTN Group leads by a wide margin. Its half-year results to June 30, 2026 put total subscribers at 317.7 million across 19 markets, up 6.7 percent. Active data users rose 9.1 percent to 179.3 million. In Nigeria, its biggest market, MTN’s base reached 92.2 million.

Behind MTN, one compiled ranking places Vodacom second with 237.3 million customers, Airtel Africa third with 183.5 million and Orange’s Africa and Middle East operations fourth with about 180 million. Maroc Telecom, Ethio telecom, Yas, Telkom South Africa, Globacom and Mobilis complete the top ten. Globacom is the only other Nigerian operator on the list, with roughly 23 million customers.

The gap between first and second is large, and the gap between third and fourth is small. Airtel Africa leads Orange by only a few million customers, so the order could change within a few reporting periods.

Why the Numbers Do Not Always Match

Customer rankings mix different definitions. Some operators report only mobile customers, while others include fixed-line and internet users. Reporting dates also differ, with figures stretching from late 2025 to September 2026. Vodacom’s total includes its stake in Safaricom, which makes comparison harder.

Ethio telecom shows the effect clearly. It ranks sixth on mobile customers but would rank fifth if total customers were counted. Readers should treat any list as a snapshot, not a final verdict.

Brand Strength Tells a Different Story

The latest global telecom brand strength ranking from Brand Finance placed Safaricom fifth, with a score of about 88 out of 100. MTN came sixth with 87.3. Neither is the biggest operator on the continent by customers, and Safaricom is far smaller than MTN, yet both rank among the most trusted telecom brands in the world.

Yas, owned by AXIAN Telecom, also made the top 20 strongest brands and was named a brand to watch. Orange ranked eighth globally by brand value at $18.6 billion.

Growth and Network Quality

Scale is not the only measure of momentum. A global business ranking of Africa’s fastest-growing companies placed Yas at number 63 this year, up from 74 in 2025. The ranking requires revenue figures to be certified at executive level.

On network performance, a global network analytics firm recognised only two African mobile operators in its latest annual awards. In South Africa, an independent measurement firm found two operators sharing the top spot for mobile internet performance, with MTN and Cell C named in the report.

What the Rankings Mean

The picture is consistent across the lists. MTN is the continent’s largest operator and a strong brand. Vodacom and Airtel Africa hold clear second and third positions on customers, while Safaricom and Yas show that smaller operators can win on brand and growth.

The next contest will be fought over data, mobile money and reliable power as much as customer counts. The operators that do well on those measures will be the ones to watch in the next set of rankings.
