AI Is Changing Recruitment, Here are some Tips for a Successful Interview

Free AI vs Paid AI

AI‑moderated interviews are becoming an increasingly common part of modern recruitment. Instead of speaking to a human recruiter first, candidates may answer questions through video, audio, or interactive assessments, with an AI system analysing responses for clarity, tone, and competence. Platforms such as HireVue, Knockri, myInterview, and Pymetrics are leading this shift, helping companies screen candidates efficiently while assessing skills and potential objectively. Understanding how these systems work is essential for performing well and advancing to the next stage of the hiring process.

Understanding the New Format

AI‑moderated interviews are different from traditional interviews. You may answer questions on video, audio, or even through interactive games. The AI system evaluates your speech, tone, body language, and responses. It is designed to assess skills and fit objectively. Knowing this is the first step to performing well.

Preparation Is More Important Than Ever

Research the role thoroughly. Understand the company’s values and priorities. Practice common interview questions out loud. Time your responses to be clear and concise. AI often scores candidates on communication and structure, so practising helps you stay within expected parameters.

Pay Attention to Your Presentation

Dress professionally, even if the interview is online. Ensure your background is tidy and well-lit. Sit upright, maintain eye contact with the camera, and avoid distractions. AI systems can interpret visual cues, so presenting yourself confidently and clearly matters.

Speak Clearly and at a Steady Pace

The AI evaluates your voice, tone, and language. Speak slowly and clearly. Avoid filler words like “um” or “like” excessively. Structure your answers logically: start with a point, provide context, and conclude. Practising with a recording tool can help you refine your delivery.

Showcase Your Experience

Focus on examples from your experience that demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, and initiative. AI often looks for patterns in answers rather than just keywords. Be specific, quantifiable, and authentic. Show your skills, but don’t exaggerate.

Manage Your Timing and Engagement

Some platforms, like HireVue or myInterview, have time limits for each question. Practice answering questions within a set timeframe. Avoid rushing, but keep answers concise. Make sure your energy and enthusiasm come through even on video.

Minimise Technical Issues

Check your internet connection, microphone, and camera in advance. Close unnecessary programs to avoid distractions or lag. A stable environment ensures your AI interview runs smoothly and that your performance is accurately evaluated.

Review and Learn From Practice Sessions

Many AI platforms allow trial runs. Take advantage of them. Analyse your delivery, tone, and body language. Adjust and refine before the real interview. Treat practice as a chance to understand how the system “hears” and “sees” you.

Confidence and Calm Are Key

Remember, AI is not judging you personally—it evaluates responses based on patterns. Stay calm, focused, and professional. Confidence translates in your voice, expressions, and posture, which can positively influence AI scoring.

Balancing AI and Human Expectations

Even though the interview is AI-moderated, your performance still shapes the next stage, where humans will review your profile. Performing well with AI increases your chances of progressing to live interviews with recruiters, who will value clarity, preparation, and professionalism.

The Takeaway

AI‑moderated interviews are a growing part of recruitment. Success comes from preparation, clear communication, confident presentation, and understanding how AI evaluates responses. Practise, refine, and stay composed. The more comfortable you are with the format, the better your performance will be.
