MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile network operator, has confirmed a cyberattack that exposed some customers’ personal information. Although the company said its core network, billing systems, and financial services are still secure, the breach has raised fresh concerns about cybersecurity in the telecom industry.
Unauthorized Access Detected, Authorities Informed
According to MTN, an unauthorized third party gained access to parts of its systems. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage. The company did not reveal which countries were affected but said it had reported the breach to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Hawks, and regulatory bodies in the impacted regions.
“There is no evidence of compromise to any of our critical infrastructure, core MTN platforms, or services. Our core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational,” MTN said in its statement.
Customer Information at Risk, Immediate Response Initiated
Even though MTN’s critical systems were not compromised, the breach involved access to customers’ personal data. The company has triggered its crisis response plan and is contacting affected customers to comply with local data protection laws.
MTN stressed its commitment to security and said, “We remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders.”
Advice for Customers: Stay Vigilant
MTN is advising customers to protect themselves by changing passwords, avoiding suspicious links, enabling multi-factor authentication where possible, and setting fraud alerts on credit reports. The company also warned customers not to share passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords (OTPs) through calls, SMS, or emails.
MTN Nigeria Reportedly Not Affected
There is some good news for Nigerian customers. Sources say MTN Nigeria was not impacted by the cyberattack. However, experts warn that no company is completely safe from future threats.
Rising Cyber Threats in the Telecom Sector
The MTN breach follows a growing pattern of cyberattacks targeting telecom companies and financial institutions worldwide. Just days earlier, South Korea’s SK Telecom announced that hackers had used malware to access sensitive user data during a weekend cyberattack, highlighting how attackers are becoming more strategic and effective.
Experts Warn About Increasing Risks
Dr. Aisha Bello, a cybersecurity analyst at CyberSec Africa, explained the risks: “Telecom operators like MTN handle enormous volumes of personal and financial data. Even if core systems are untouched, breaches involving customer information can erode public trust if not managed transparently and swiftly.”
Leonard Eze, an information security consultant based in Lagos, added, “While MTN’s swift activation of response protocols is commendable, the evolving nature of cyber threats requires continuous investment in proactive cybersecurity measures, including regular penetration testing, system audits, and robust incident response frameworks.”
The MTN cyberattack is another reminder of the rising digital threats facing major telecom operators. Although MTN has acted quickly to contain the situation, experts say companies must continue to strengthen their defenses.
