Kenya Airways to Resume Direct Flights to Angola in March

Kenya Airways will resume direct flights to Luanda, Angola, starting in March. This announcement was made by President William Ruto after a significant meeting with President João Lourenço of Angola at the presidential palace in Luanda. The move reflects the growing cooperation between the two nations and aims to bolster trade, tourism, and diplomatic ties.

A Step Towards Enhanced Connectivity

President Ruto emphasized the importance of this development during the meeting. He stated:

“We welcome Angola’s decision to work with Kenya in facilitating the resumption of Kenya Airways’ direct flights to Luanda from March. Coupled with the reciprocal waiver of visa requirements for Kenyans, this will strengthen bilateral ties and expand opportunities for enhanced cooperation and mutual benefits.”

Broader Diplomatic and Economic Discussions

The two leaders delved into issues of regional and continental importance. These included:

  • AU Leadership: President Ruto sought Angola’s backing for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the position of AU Commission chairperson.
  • African Union (AU) Reforms: President Ruto, tasked with spearheading AU institutional reforms, invited President Lourenço to a retreat in Kenya ahead of the AU Heads of State Summit in February.
  • Peace in the Great Lakes Region: They discussed the Luanda Process, stressing the importance of collaboration between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to address the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.

Strengthening Trade and Regional Cooperation

Beyond aviation and visas, the discussions also focused on strengthening trade relations between Kenya and Angola. The two nations aim to deepen collaboration across various sectors, including commerce, tourism, and education.

President Ruto was accompanied by key Kenyan officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, Governors Anne Waiguru and Gladys Wanga, and other dignitaries, underscoring the importance of the visit.
