OpenAI just dropped a bombshell that could reshape how people find work and gain skills worldwide. The ChatGPT creator announced plans to build an AI-powered jobs platform and certification program.
The company revealed two major initiatives that put it on a collision course with Microsoft’s LinkedIn and traditional job boards. First comes the OpenAI Jobs Platform, set to launch mid-2026. Second is an expanded certification program through OpenAI Academy that starts pilot testing in late 2025.
OpenAI Takes Aim at LinkedIn’s Job Market Dominance
The OpenAI Jobs Platform will use AI to match job seekers with employers, creating direct competition with LinkedIn. This creates an awkward situation since Microsoft, LinkedIn’s owner, has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and remains the startup’s biggest financial backer.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, emphasized the platform won’t just serve big corporations. “The jobs platform won’t just be a way for big companies to attract more talent. It will have a track dedicated to helping local businesses compete, and local governments find the AI talent they need,” she explained.
The platform promises to connect AI-skilled candidates at every level with opportunities across industries. Local governments will also get access to AI talent pools to better serve their communities globally.
Walmart Partnership Drives Massive Training Initiative
OpenAI secured Walmart as its flagship partner for the certification program. The retail giant, America’s largest private employer, will help train workers in AI skills through customized programs as part of the broader international rollout.
John Furner, Walmart U.S. CEO, said the partnership puts powerful technology directly into workers’ hands. “At Walmart, we know the future of retail won’t be defined by technology alone…it will be defined by people who know how to use it”.
The certification program covers multiple skill levels, from basic AI workplace integration to advanced prompt engineering. Workers can prepare for certifications directly through ChatGPT’s Study mode without leaving the app.
Global AI Skills Gap Creates Urgent Training Demand
Recent data shows explosive growth in AI job requirements worldwide. Demand for AI skills jumped 240% from 2010 to 2024, with 1.7% of job postings now requiring AI expertise.
Meanwhile, 75% of global knowledge workers now use generative AI, nearly doubling usage in just six months. Yet training programs lag behind demand, with only 38% of executives providing adequate AI training despite 80% of employees wanting it.
Studies consistently show AI-skilled workers earn higher salaries and demonstrate greater productivity than their non-AI counterparts. Research from Boston Consulting Group confirms that AI-fluent employees deliver superior performance across multiple metrics.
Tech Giants Rush to Address AI Workforce Disruption Globally
OpenAI’s initiative comes as tech leaders warn about AI’s disruptive impact on employment worldwide. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicts AI could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs before 2030.
Other major companies are launching similar programs internationally. IBM commits to training 30 million people in digital skills globally, including 2 million in AI by 2026. Intel plans to empower over 30 million workers with AI capabilities.
Simo acknowledged AI’s disruptive nature but emphasized opportunity over threat. “AI will also be disruptive. Jobs will look different, companies will have to adapt, and all of us will have to learn how to work in new ways.”
Platform Strategy Expands Beyond ChatGPT
CEO Sam Altman recently hinted at multiple new applications under development, including a potential browser and social media platform.
This expansion strategy could intensify competition with Microsoft across multiple fronts. Microsoft already labeled OpenAI as a competitor in search and news advertising in its 2024 annual filing, despite their investment partnership.
Training Programs Target Real Workforce Needs
OpenAI studied past upskilling program failures to design more effective training. The company focuses on employer-driven skill requirements rather than generic certifications. Partnership with major employers like Walmart ensures training matches actual job market demands.
The Texas Association of Business plans to use the platform connecting thousands of employers with AI-skilled talent for business modernization. This approach targets regional workforce development while building a model for global expansion.
Training delivery through ChatGPT’s Study mode offers personalized, interactive learning experiences. The AI tutor provides hints, questions, and feedback instead of direct answers, promoting deeper skill development.
OpenAI Academy has already connected over 2 million people worldwide with AI resources, workshops, and communities. The expanded certification program builds on this global foundation with structured, verifiable skill credentials.
Workers can progress from basic AI workplace integration through intermediate applications to advanced custom AI development and prompt engineering. Companies can integrate these certifications into existing learning and development programs.
With proper training infrastructure, millions of people worldwide could gain valuable AI expertise that enhances their career prospects and earning potential.
