5-Band RRU

In a groundbreaking technological leap, ZTE Corporation and MTN South Africa have successfully executed the world’s first commercial deployment of a 5-band Remote Radio Unit (RRU) in the Western Cape. This innovation promises to reshape how mobile networks across Africa handle capacity, efficiency, and infrastructure constraints.

A Leap in Network Efficiency and Integration

The newly deployed 5-band RRU marks a significant integration of all of MTN South Africa’s low and mid-band Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) bands into one compact unit. Designed by ZTE’s in-house chipset team, this consolidated solution slashes the number of traditional RAN (Radio Access Network) modules by 50%, reduces equipment weight by 23%, and cuts wind resistance by 18%, all contributing to simplified site construction and reduced tower burden.

Sustainable and Smarter Power Usage

At the heart of the RRU’s energy performance is ZTE’s advanced Super-N amplifier architecture. This design employs dense arrays of power amplifiers that can switch on or off based on demand. It overcomes traditional limitations seen in Doherty amplifier designs and delivers outstanding efficiency:

  • 42.7% reduction in overall site power consumption
  • 45.8% improvement in energy efficiency (measured in Wh/GB)

Industry Recognition and Strategic Implications

Rami Farah, CTO of MTN South Africa, recognised the collaboration’s broader impact:

“This collaboration effectively addresses multiple challenges faced by operators in terms of coverage, capacity, cost, and energy efficiency… accelerating the evolution of telecommunication networks towards higher efficiency and lower carbon emissions.”

Luca Shen, CEO of ZTE South Africa, framed the project as a rich example of how the partnership elevates network infrastructure:

“ZTE has always regarded product leadership as its core competitiveness… [This project] accelerates the rapid upgrade of South Africa’s telecommunication network, setting a benchmark for digital transformation across the African continent.”

Why It Matters

  1. Infrastructure Optimisation — Reducing physical modules by half and decreasing structural weight opens up tower flexibility, especially in remote or constrained sites.
  2. Energy-Efficient Evolution — Dramatic power savings align with both operational cost reduction and global environmental goals.
  3. Scalable Framework — The success in South Africa provides a replicable model for other operators across the continent grappling with similar multi-band and site limitations.
  4. Strengthening Digital Futures — As MTN continues its network expansion, this innovation gives African telecom infrastructure a performance and sustainability boost.

This pioneering deployment underscores ZTE and MTN’s commitment to pushing telecom frontiers, offering a template for an efficient, eco-conscious upgrade path across Africa’s next-generation mobile networks.
