Women & Financial Crime: Hidden Victims, Rising Defenders

Financial crime isn’t merely a compliance challenge—it’s fundamentally a women’s issue.

Every month of March we celebrate Women, we honor women’s achievements globally. However, today I choose to highlight an area often overlooked yet crucially important—women’s role in compliance and financial crime prevention.

Allow me first to celebrate my journey as a woman deeply committed to combating financial crime, advocating ethical governance, and promoting compliance excellence. But my story isn’t unique. Look around you; there are numerous remarkable women in compliance actively making a difference. Let’s celebrate them, too.

The Hidden Impact on Women

Financial crime is commonly viewed as transactional and numerical. But behind every fraudulent scheme and money laundering incident, real lives are profoundly affected—often disproportionately impacting women.

Consider these facts:

  • Research indicates approximately 70% of financial crime victims are women, particularly impacted by schemes like Ponzi scams and investment fraud.
  • Women, especially in developing nations, often lose entire life savings to fraudulent activities due to limited financial literacy and inadequate regulatory safeguards.
  • Financial abuse remains a frequently used tool for controlling and exploiting women, yet it’s among the least reported crimes globally.

Financial crime is therefore not simply about money—it disrupts lives, fractures families, and erodes community trust. Women often bear the heaviest consequences of these failures.

Women Transitioning from Victims to Frontline Defenders

Yet there’s hope: women have transitioned from victims to powerful defenders. Women now lead transformative change across the compliance landscape, including Anti-Money Laundering (AML), fraud prevention, and ethical governance.

  • Women in AML roles actively dismantle financial crime networks, intercepting illegal transactions before they inflict harm.
  • Compliance-focused women strengthen organizational integrity, creating robust internal control systems.
  • Female governance leaders are shaping transparent policies and advocating for fairness, accountability, and ethical standards.

Today, I proudly celebrate these women—resilient leaders courageously excelling despite challenges, driving the fight against financial crime and advocating for justice.
