MTN MoMo Deepens Mastercard Partnership to Boost Digital Payments Across Africa

MTN Group’s fintech arm, MoMo, has expanded its partnership with Mastercard, strengthening efforts to accelerate digital payments, financial inclusion, and cross-border commerce across Africa. The move builds on an earlier strategic equity investment from Mastercard into MTN’s fintech business and extends digital wallet-to-card capabilities to more users and merchants.

A Push to Expand Financial Access

Africa remains one of the world’s most under-banked regions. Millions of people still transact in cash or rely solely on mobile wallets. MoMo, with tens of millions of active mobile-money users, sees card-linked services and global payment rails as the next step in widening access.

The expanded partnership aims to provide MoMo users with the ability to make secure online and in-store payments globally through Mastercard virtual and physical cards linked directly to mobile wallets. This positions MoMo as a broader digital financial services platform.

Transforming Merchant Payments

Merchants remain a critical focus. Small and medium businesses across Africa still struggle to accept digital payments, limiting growth in digital commerce. Under the new agreement, MoMo merchants will gain access to card-acceptance tools, including QR payments and tap-to-pay, enabling even informal traders to transact digitally with customers worldwide.

This step is expected to drive formalisation, improve business transparency, and support wider economic activity.

Strengthening Cross-Border Transactions

Africa’s fragmented payment landscape makes international transfers complex and expensive. The enhanced collaboration aims to simplify cross-border payments by combining MoMo’s mobile-money network with Mastercard’s global payment infrastructure. Users will see improved international remittances, e-commerce convenience, and digital transfers.

This capability is especially valuable for intra-African trade, online freelancers, travellers, and diaspora-linked families.

Impact for Nigeria and Other Key Markets

Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, and several other markets are positioned for direct benefits. Nigerian MoMo users could soon enjoy expanded card services, enabling international online spending even without a traditional bank account. Local SMEs are also set to gain access to more efficient digital payments beyond the banking system.

Markets where the virtual MoMo card has already been launched offer a preview. Users have easier access to global platforms, a growing online commerce activity, and greater financial empowerment for individuals and businesses.

A Catalyst for Africa’s Digital Economy

The upgraded MTN-Mastercard partnership marks a significant shift in African fintech: mobile wallets are evolving from basic transfer tools into comprehensive financial access platforms. For consumers, it means greater freedom to spend and transact globally.  It represents new pathways to digital commerce for merchants. For the broader economy, it marks another step towards modernised payment systems and inclusive financial participation.

The coming months will show how quickly services roll out across MTN’s major markets, but the trajectory is clear. Mobile money and global payment networks are converging in ways that could reshape Africa’s digital financial future.
