How to Get Paid on X (Twitter) in Nigeria: A Complete Guide for Aspiring Content Creators

To get paid on X (formerly Twitter) as a Nigerian creator, the primary method is through the Creator Revenue Sharing program, where you earn a share of ad revenue from ads displayed in replies to your posts. This is available globally, including in Nigeria, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and set up payouts via Stripe (X’s payment processor).

Note that X also offers other monetization options like Subscriptions (where followers pay for exclusive content), but this guide focuses on Revenue Sharing as it’s the main direct payment program from X. The process requires building engagement on your account first.

Be aware that earnings depend on impressions, engagement, and ad views. There’s no fixed pay rate, but creators report varying amounts based on niche and audience (e.g., $0.01–$0.05 per 1,000 impressions from ads). Payouts are in USD, and Stripe handles conversions/fees for Nigerian bank accounts.

8 Ways to Gain Verified Followers on X

Step 1: Meet the Basic Eligibility Standards

Before applying, ensure your account complies with X’s overall monetization rules. You must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Live in Nigeria (which is a supported country for the program and payouts).
  • Have an active X account for at least 3 months.
  • Have a complete profile: Include an account name, bio, profile picture, and header image.
  • Verify your email address (go to Settings > Account > Email).
  • Enable two-factor authentication (Settings > Security and account access > Security).
  • Not be a state-affiliated media account.
  • Be in good standing: No repeated violations of X’s User Agreement, Content Monetization Standards, or Ads policies.

If your account doesn’t meet all these, fix them first. X reviews compliance during setup.

Step 2: Subscribe to X Premium

  • You need an active X monthly subscription (starting at about 3,000 Naira/month for the basic tier, while the premium tier starts at 7,600 Naira/month, and the premium+ at about 39,000 Naira. All payable via card or other methods available in Nigeria.
  • Sign up via the X app or website: Go to the sidebar menu > Premium > Subscribe.
  • This is required for all monetization features and gives you a blue checkmark, which helps with visibility.

Step 3: Build Your Account to Meet Revenue Sharing Criteria

Focus on growth and engagement to qualify:

  • Gain at least 500 verified followers (followers who are also X Premium subscribers or verified organizations).
  • Achieve at least 5 million organic impressions on your posts over the last 3 months (track this in X Analytics via the app/website).
  • Post consistently in a niche (e.g., tech, entertainment, finance) to build genuine engagement. Avoid spam or bots, as X detects and penalizes this.
  • Comply with X’s Ads Revenue Sharing Terms and Content Monetization Standards (e.g., no deceptive content, hate speech, or misinformation).

Tips to hit these metrics:

  • Post high-quality, original content 5–10 times daily.
  • Engage in trending topics, reply to popular accounts, and use threads/images/videos for better reach.
  • Network with other creators in Nigeria via replies or spaces.
  • It may take 1–3 months of consistent effort to reach 5M impressions if starting small.

Check your eligibility periodically in Settings > Monetization.

Step 4: Apply and Set Up Monetization

Once eligible:

  • Go to the sidebar menu > Monetization (or directly to x.com/settings/monetization).
  • Select “Creator Revenue Sharing” and click “Join” if prompted.
  • Agree to the terms.

Step 5: Connect a Stripe Account for Payouts

  • In the Monetization settings, select “Set up payouts.”
  • Create or connect a Stripe account (free to sign up at stripe.com). Make sure to use your Nigerian details.
    • Provide your full name, address, phone, and bank account info (Stripe supports major Nigerian banks like GTBank, Zenith, etc., for USD transfers).
    • Verify your identity with a government ID (e.g., Nigerian passport, driver’s license, or national ID) and possibly a selfie.
  • Stripe may require additional business info if you’re registering as an individual or business in Nigeria (e.g., BVN or CAC registration for compliance).
  • Complete any tax forms (e.g., W-8BEN for non-US residents to avoid higher withholding).

Nigeria-specific note: Stripe payouts to Nigeria are supported, but expect a 1–2% conversion fee to NGN and potential bank charges. Transfers typically take 2–7 business days.

Step 6: Start Earning and Monitor

  • After you qualify and activate X’s monetization program, you can start earning money from advertisements that appear in the comments under your posts. You don’t choose or place the ads yourself. X automatically inserts ads in the reply section of viral or high-engagement posts.
  • Track earnings in Monetization > Revenue Sharing.
  • Payouts are automatic every two weeks if you reach the $30 minimum threshold (after X’s share and any fees).
  • Earnings are taxed based on your location. X withholds US taxes if applicable, but report income to Nigerian authorities (e.g., via FIRS).

If you don’t qualify yet, consider alternative ways to monetize on X in Nigeria (not direct from X): Promote affiliate products, sell digital goods via links, or offer sponsored posts to brands.

For issues, contact X Support via the app or check help.x.com. Stay consistent because many Nigerian creators earn $100–$1,000+ monthly once eligible.
