Instagram Now Lets You Pin Your Own Comments on Posts & Reels

Instagram just dropped a feature creators have been asking for since 2020. You can now pin your own comments on posts and Reels. This small change could make a big difference in how you connect with your audience.

The social media platform rolled out this update after head Adam Mosseri heard the request during a recent Q&A session. Until now, you could only pin comments from other users, up to three per post. But creators wanted more control over their comment sections.

Instagram Self-Comment Pinning Changes the Game

This feature gives creators complete control over their comment threads. You can now highlight your own thoughts, add context, or share important updates right at the top of the discussion.

Instagram first introduced comment pinning in 2020, but it only worked for other people’s comments. This limitation frustrated many creators who wanted to add their voice to the conversation prominently.

The update addresses a simple but important need. As Mosseri explained, “The whole point of pinned comments is that you should be able to shape that comment thread into whatever you want, because it’s your post in the first place.”

How Creators Benefit from Pinned Self-Comments

This feature opens up several strategic opportunities for content creators:

  • Answer Common Questions: Pin responses to frequently asked questions before they pile up in your comments. This saves time and helps other followers find answers quickly.
  • Add Context and Updates: Share additional information that didn’t fit in your original caption. You can provide updates, corrections, or behind-the-scenes details.
  • Drive Specific Actions: Use pinned comments to encourage followers to “check the link in bio,” “tag a friend,” or participate in challenges. These calls-to-action get more visibility at the top of the comment thread.
  • Control Discussion Tone: Set the conversation direction by pinning thoughtful, positive comments that encourage similar responses from your audience.

Pinned Comments Boost Engagement Metrics

Pinned comments can indirectly improve your engagement rates. When followers see important information right away, they’re more likely to interact meaningfully with your content.

The feature doesn’t directly influence Instagram’s algorithm, but better engagement metrics can help your content reach more people. Comments that answer questions or add value often spark more discussion in the thread.

Brands and businesses can use this tool to highlight customer testimonials, product details, or promotional information. The pinned comment stays visible even as hundreds of other comments pour in.

Step-by-Step Guide to Pin Your Comments

Here’s how to use the new feature:

  1. Post your content and add a comment to your own post
  2. Find your comment in the thread
  3. Swipe left on your comment (iOS) or long-press (Android)
  4. Tap the pin icon that appears
  5. Confirm you want to pin the comment

Your comment will move to the top of the thread with a small pin icon next to it. You can still pin up to three comments total, including your own and others from followers.

Remember, you can’t add clickable links in comments. The feature only supports text, emojis, and mentions of other Instagram accounts.

Instagram Creator Tools Keep Expanding

This update shows Instagram’s commitment to giving creators more control over their content and communities. The platform has been steadily adding features that help creators manage their presence more effectively.

Other recent updates include enhanced analytics, better content scheduling options, and improved messaging tools. Instagram continues competing with TikTok and YouTube by making the platform more creator-friendly.

The comment pinning expansion follows feedback from creators who wanted equal treatment in their own comment sections. It’s a small change that addresses a real frustration many content creators faced daily.

What This Means for Your Content Strategy

Start thinking about how pinned self-comments can enhance your posts. Consider what additional information your audience always asks about. Plan comments that add value rather than just promoting your brand.

The feature works on both regular posts and Reels, giving you flexibility across different content types. Test different approaches to see what resonates with your specific audience.

Most importantly, use this tool strategically. Don’t pin comments just because you can. Make sure they serve your audience’s needs and improve their experience with your content.

Check your app for the update and start experimenting with pinned self-comments on your next post.
