On April 27, 2025, Nigerian-born inventor Oluwatobi Oyinlola made history by creating the smallest GPS tracking device prototype officially recognized by the Guinness World Records. Measuring 22.93 mm x 11.92 mm (0.90 x 0.46 in), this prototype represents a breakthrough in both technological miniaturization and African-led hardware innovation.

Oyinlola is currently a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His invention reflects years of dedication to hardware engineering and embedded systems design. Nicknamed the “Internet of Tobi”, he has spearheaded the development and mass production of over 15 IoT-enabled devices. Many of which are designed with a mission to solve real-world problems, particularly within African contexts.

From Lagos to MIT

Before his current role at MIT, Oyinlola was part of the engineering team behind Elon Musk’s Hyperloop, showcasing his reach across futuristic transportation and next-generation systems.

In addition to his technical accomplishments, Oyinlola also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Intel’s IoT program. This has further anchored his credibility as a thought leader in the future of connected devices. His latest record-setting invention is seen as proof for what is possible when local talent is backed with the right support.

National Recognition and Endorsement

The recognition has reverberated across Nigeria’s highest levels of leadership.

In a LinkedIn post, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, celebrated the achievement:

“Long before this global recognition, I had the privilege of backing Oluwatobi’s IoT startup and witnessing firsthand the brilliance and drive he brings to innovation. His journey — now continuing at MIT — is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary potential of our people.”

Dr. Tijani emphasized that Oyinlola’s success aligns with the country’s mission to nurture and invest in indigenous talent, a key part of Nigeria’s digital economic strategy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also congratulated Oyinlola on X:

“You have just shown the world that Nigerian youth can!”

He went on to highlight the vast potential of the innovation, noting that the miniature GPS tracker offers endless possibilities for use in various industries and spheres of life.

Endless Possibilities Ahead

Oyinlola’s record-setting device opens new frontiers for ultra-compact, and smart technologies. More importantly, it puts a Nigerian innovator at the center of that future.

As Oyinlola continues his research at MIT, his trajectory affirms what’s possible when innovation is rooted in both global excellence and local relevance.
