WhatsApp Experiments with Usernames to Replace Phone Numbers

WhatsApp Experiments with Usernames to Replace Phone Numbers

Meta-owned WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could redefine how people connect on the platform. The messaging app has begun rolling out a username option to selected beta users, allowing them to choose unique identifiers instead of relying solely on their phone numbers.

A New Layer of Privacy

The introduction of usernames represents a significant privacy upgrade for the platform. Until now, WhatsApp required users to share their personal phone numbers to initiate conversations. With this update, users will be able to search for and connect with others using a chosen handle, much like on Telegram or Instagram.

This shift could reduce the risk of exposing personal contact details, particularly in professional or public settings. It also aligns with broader industry trends, where platforms are offering more flexible identity tools.

How the Feature Works

The username feature is currently available to a limited group of beta testers on Android. Within the settings menu, users can find a dedicated “Username” field where they can set a unique name.

Key details so far include:

  • Each username must be unique, similar to how handles work on other platforms.

  • The feature will allow people to find and message others without seeing their phone numbers.

  • Users will still have control over who can find them by username, adding an extra layer of security.

Though WhatsApp has not released an official launch timeline, the presence of usernames in the beta version suggests a public rollout could follow soon.

Strengthening WhatsApp’s Global Reach

WhatsApp’s reliance on phone numbers has long been a distinguishing factor, particularly in regions where it serves as the primary communication tool. By introducing usernames, the platform can offer more flexibility to users in markets where privacy and personal data security are increasingly important.

This change could also pave the way for smoother cross-border communication, easier business interactions, and more streamlined user discovery without requiring the exchange of personal information.

A New Direction for WhatsApp

Meta is positioning WhatsApp for a more privacy-centric future while maintaining its core simplicity. If usernames are fully rolled out, it would mark one of the most significant updates to the platform in years, one that could reshape how billions of users connect worldwide.
