Wakanow Acquires Nairabox to Merge Travel and Entertainment Across Africa

Wakanow Group has officially acquired Nairabox, the Nigerian digital ticketing platform that sells over 10 million entertainment tickets annually. The deal, finalized after two years of negotiations between Wakanow Group CEO Bayo Adedeji and Nairabox co-founder Ugochukwu Jay Chikezie, positions Africa’s largest online travel company to capture a larger share of the continent’s booming lifestyle market.

Wakanow Targets Africa’s $38 Billion Entertainment Gold Rush

Industry projections indicate that the market will jump from $15 billion in 2025 to $38 billion by 2028, creating massive opportunities for companies that can bridge both industries.

Since launching in 2015, Nairabox has pioneered barcode-based ticketing in Nigeria and created Africa’s first subscription cinema service. The company processes millions of ticket sales across cinemas, concerts, and live events, making it the continent’s most recognized entertainment booking platform.

“We started this journey in 2015, pioneering barcode technology for ticketing and changing how consumers accessed movie and concert tickets. Today, the brand has become a household name in ticketing,” said Chikezie in his LinkedIn announcement.

Travel Meets Entertainment in Digital Africa Strategy

Wakanow already operates multiple platforms, including Wakanow.com, fintech service Kalabash54.com, accommodation marketplace Roomde.com, and corporate travel platform Onburd.com.

The Nairabox integration creates what Adedeji calls a “comprehensive lifestyle ecosystem” where travellers can book flights, hotels, and entertainment in one seamless experience.

“We see tremendous opportunity where travel and entertainment intersect. This acquisition lets us offer richer experiences to customers, not just where they travel, but how they live, enjoy, and engage with culture.” Adedeji explained.

Nairabox Technology Powers Entertainment Booking Revolution

Nairabox’s technology stack includes advanced barcode systems, mobile payment integration, and real-time inventory management across hundreds of venues. The platform connects users to cinema chains, concert venues, restaurants, and event organizers through its mobile app and web platform.

The company’s subscription model for cinema tickets broke new ground in African entertainment, allowing users to watch unlimited movies for a monthly fee. This innovation helped Nairabox build strong relationships with major cinema operators and event promoters across Nigeria.

Strategic Leadership Team Drives Integration Success

Wakanow has appointed Tobi Andero as Head of Business for Nairabox, bringing experience from Oracle Experiential Marketing to lead the platform’s expansion across Africa. Chikezie continues as CEO during the transition period, ensuring continuity for existing partnerships and operations.

The integration will leverage Wakanow’s existing financial tools, including its “Pay Small Small” installment payment service and Amina, the company’s AI-powered booking assistant. These technologies will help scale Nairabox’s reach beyond Nigeria into Wakanow’s active markets across West and East Africa.

Financial Impact Signals Confidence in African Growth

While specific deal terms remain confidential, industry sources suggest the acquisition values Nairabox at over $10 million, reflecting strong confidence in Nigeria’s entertainment market potential. The deal includes the resolution of outstanding debts with cinema operators, providing a clean slate for future growth.

Wakanow’s expanded portfolio now encompasses travel booking, accommodation, payments, and entertainment, creating multiple revenue streams that reduce dependence on travel market fluctuations. This diversification strategy has proven successful for other African tech companies navigating economic uncertainty.

The acquisition positions both companies to benefit from Nigeria’s growing middle class and increasing urbanization, trends that drive demand for both travel and entertainment services. As more Africans gain disposable income and internet access, platforms that combine convenience with local cultural understanding gain significant competitive advantages.
