Paramount Africa will close its regional operations at the end of December 2025. The company announced the decision as part of a wider restructuring by its parent, Paramount Global.
As a result, BET Africa, MTV Base, CBS Justice and CBS Reality will be removed from DStv and GOtv at 09:00 on 1 January 2026.
The closure ends almost two decades of activity across more than fifty African markets. Reports also indicate that the Johannesburg and Lagos offices will wind down once the transition period is complete.
Why This Moment Matters For African TV
This is one of the most significant withdrawals by an international broadcaster from the continent in recent years. For many viewers, Paramount Africa’s channels played a steady role in shaping youth culture, entertainment coverage and music programming. Their absence reduces the variety of global content available on traditional TV.
The move also reflects the economic pressure facing large media companies. Paramount Global has been cutting costs, reorganising its international units and shifting investment toward digital distribution. The African shutdown fits into that pattern.
Millions of subscribers across Nigeria, South Africa and other markets will lose access to the affected channels in January.
Employees in the regional offices face operational changes and job losses as the shutdown progresses.
Advertisers and promoters who relied on the channels for youth-focused campaigns may need alternative placements on local broadcasters or other established entertainment outlets.
Pay-TV operators will remove the channels on 1 January. Viewers will adapt to the remaining lineup on DStv and GOtv or explore other established entertainment sources.
Industry watchers expect local production houses and African broadcasters to compete for the space left behind. The shutdown may also accelerate the broader shift toward digital-first viewing as audiences look for new options.
