MTN Group has officially surpassed 300 million customers across its markets, reaching a target set under its Ambition 2025 strategy. The announcement coincides with the company’s 30th anniversary, highlighting its growth as one of Africa’s largest telecom operators.

A Milestone Decades in the Making

Founded in 1994, MTN has expanded from a single market in South Africa to more than 20 countries across Africa and the Middle East. Its 300 million customer milestone underscores the scale of mobile adoption and digital connectivity on the continent.

The group’s CEO, Ralph Mupita, described the achievement as a “significant moment” in MTN’s journey, noting that it reflects the company’s commitment to connecting communities and driving inclusive growth.

A Core Pillar of Ambition 2025

The milestone fulfils one of the key targets set under MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on expanding its core connectivity business, accelerating fintech services, and investing in digital infrastructure.

Increased mobile penetration, mobile money services, and data demand have driven MTN’s growth strategy. The company has invested heavily in expanding network coverage and digital platforms, particularly in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Powering Africa’s Digital Transformation

MTN’s customer base includes both mobile voice and data subscribers, as well as users of its financial services platforms. Its mobile money ecosystem now serves millions of users and merchants, playing an increasingly central role in Africa’s digital economy.

The company has also been at the forefront of 4G and 5G rollouts, as well as network modernisation projects aimed at bridging digital gaps between urban and rural communities.

Looking Beyond the 300 Million Mark

While the milestone is a symbolic achievement, MTN has signalled that it will continue expanding its services and partnerships. The group is focusing on new growth areas, including AI, cloud services, and infrastructure sharing.

With Africa’s population projected to surpass 1.4 billion by 2030, MTN aims to deepen digital inclusion and broaden access to mobile broadband.
