Apple has launched the AirPods Max 2 with a clear goal to make its most expensive headphones feel current again, without changing the price. Apple set the price at $549 in the US, and it plans to open orders on March 25. Apple says it will start delivering and stocking Apple Stores early next month.
Apple also confirmed five colour options: Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue. Apple plans to sell AirPods Max 2 in more than 30 countries and regions.
Several outlets matched those details and framed the release as a long-overdue refresh of Apple’s premium over-ear lineup.
H2 powers the biggest changes, and Apple focuses on sound control
Apple built AirPods Max 2 around its H2 headphone chip. That chip enables features that already show up on newer AirPods models, and Apple now brings them to its premium headphones. Apple lists Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Personalized Volume among the headline additions.
Apple also claims a stronger noise-cancelling system. It says AirPods Max 2 delivers noise cancelling that is up to 1.5 times more effective than the first AirPods Max. Apple also says Transparency mode sounds more natural due to updated signal processing tuned for the H2 chip and the microphone array.
Live Translation with clear limits
Apple says AirPods Max 2 supports Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple positions it as an in-person feature that helps two people communicate across languages. Apple also notes that Live Translation depends on an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, plus up-to-date firmware.
Apple also publishes the supported language list. It includes English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese Brazil, Spanish Spain, and Chinese in simplified and traditional forms. Apple says availability varies by region and language. That makes Live Translation a real feature, but not a universal one on day one.
Calls and recording get a bigger push this year
Apple wants AirPods Max 2 to do more than play music. Apple says Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice on calls while blocking ambient noise using computational audio. Apple also says studio-quality audio recording helps interviewers, podcasters, singers, and other creators capture more natural vocal texture.
This focus also signals where Apple sees growth. A premium headset now needs to handle meetings, voice notes, interviews, and quick content capture. Apple says AirPods Max 2 supports camera remote too, which lets you press the Digital Crown to take a photo or start and stop video recording on iPhone or iPad with supported apps.
Who AirPods Max 2 fit best
AirPods Max 2 fits buyers who already live inside the Apple ecosystem and want Apple’s newest listening features in an over ear design. The value rises most for people who take calls in noisy places, travel often, or plan to use Live Translation with a compatible Apple Intelligence iPhone setup.
It also fits people who want wired lossless audio through USB-C, since Apple now markets that feature directly on the product page and specs sheet. If you listen mostly over Bluetooth and you already own the USB-C AirPods Max generation, the practical gains will center on the H2 features and improved noise control.
