Google TV Gets AI Upgrade That Turns Your Remote Into a Smart Assistant

Google just made watching TV feel like talking to a friend. The company rolled out Gemini AI to Google TV, bringing conversational voice control to your living room screen.

TCL’s QM9K series becomes the first TV to offer this new experience. More devices will get the upgrade later this year, including Google TV Streamer and select models from Hisense and other major brands.

Gemini Replaces Basic Voice Commands With Real Conversations

Traditional TV voice controls make you repeat “Hey Google” for every request. Gemini changes this completely. You can now have flowing conversations with your TV without starting over each time.

Ask your TV: “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.” Gemini processes both preferences and suggests shows that work for everyone. Follow up with “What are the reviews for that show?” and it keeps the conversation going.

The AI assistant handles vague searches too. If you can’t remember the name of that hospital drama everyone talks about? Just describe it. Gemini connects the dots and recommends “The Pitt” along with other options.

Your TV Becomes a Learning Hub With Video Support

Gemini transforms Google TV into an educational tool. The AI provides detailed answers and pulls up relevant YouTube videos directly on your big screen.

Parents helping with homework can ask: “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader.” Gemini delivers age-appropriate explanations and suggests hands-on activities like “How do I make a model volcano?”

The feature works for adult learning too. Want to pick up guitar? Ask “How do I learn guitar as a beginner?” and get structured learning paths with video tutorials.

Kitchen planning gets easier with queries like “What’s a dessert I can make in less than an hour?” Gemini suggests recipes and shows cooking videos to guide you through the process.

Limited Availability Creates Premium Experience

Right now, only the TCL QM9K series offers Gemini integration. This premium TV line starts at around $3,000 for the 65-inch model, making it an expensive early adoption play.

Google plans broader rollouts later this year. The Google TV Streamer, Walmart’s onn. 4K Pro, and new 2025 models from Hisense and TCL will get the upgrade. However, no specific dates are confirmed for these releases.

Current Google TV users keep all existing Google Assistant features. Gemini adds new capabilities on top rather than replacing basic functions. This approach ensures backward compatibility while introducing advanced AI features.

Technical Integration Maintains Familiar Controls

Users access Gemini the same way they use Google Assistant today. Say “Hey Google” or press the microphone button on your TV remote. The interface shows when Gemini is active versus standard Assistant functions.

The AI processes natural language queries and maintains context across multiple questions. This means you can ask follow-up questions about shows, actors, or topics without repeating background information.

Google built Gemini integration to work with existing Google TV features. Your watchlists, preferences, and app ecosystem remain unchanged. The AI layer adds intelligence without disrupting established viewing patterns.

The rollout affects over 300 million Google TV and Android TV OS devices eventually. However, the phased approach means most users wait months for access to these conversational TV features.
