WordPress Drops Telex AI Tool That Builds Website Blocks From Simple Text Commands

WordPress just changed how anyone can build websites by creating Telex, an experimental AI tool that turns plain English descriptions into working website components, with no coding skills required.

At WordCamp US 2025 in Portland, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg showed how Telex generates Gutenberg blocks, the building pieces of every WordPress site through simple text prompts. You type what you want, then get a functional website element in seconds.

How Telex AI Transforms Website Building

Telex operates through telex.automattic.ai, where users describe their desired content blocks in normal language. The AI processes these requests and delivers downloadable .zip files containing ready-to-install plugins for WordPress sites.

During his demonstration, Mullenweg showcased a developer’s marketing animation created entirely through Telex prompts. The tool eliminated traditional barriers between ideas and implementation, turning concepts into code without technical knowledge.

“We’re taking things that were difficult to do, that required knowledge of coding or anything else, and making them accessible to people,” Mullenweg explained during his keynote address. The statement reflects WordPress’s core mission to democratize web publishing across all skill levels.

The generated blocks work seamlessly with WordPress Playground, the browser-based version that runs without hosting requirements. This combination allows immediate testing and experimentation with AI-generated components before deployment.

Telex AI Development Faces Early Growing Pains

Early users discovered Telex isn’t production-ready yet. Multiple test projects crashed or demanded significant manual adjustments before functioning properly. The experimental label across the interface serves as fair warning about current limitations.

WordPress formed a dedicated AI team earlier this year specifically to develop tools supporting long-term platform objectives. The team’s formation is part of WordPress’s strategic AI integration plans.

Mullenweg acknowledged these development challenges while maintaining enthusiasm for AI’s transformative potential. “At the core of it, there is a seed of something, which is so enabling,” he said about AI technology’s future impact on WordPress development.

WordPress AI Strategy Extends Beyond Block Generation

The WordCamp presentation featured additional AI experiments beyond Telex. Mullenweg demonstrated a WordPress help assistant created during a brief Contributor Day session, showcasing AI development possibilities.

He also highlighted Perplexity’s Comet browser as his preferred AI-powered interface for WordPress interaction. This endorsement points to WordPress’s openness to third-party AI integrations alongside internal development efforts.

The CEO expressed measured optimism about AI development, acknowledging industry hype concerns while emphasizing genuine technological potential. “It is an incredibly exciting time to be building for WordPress,” Mullenweg stated, balancing excitement with realistic expectations.

Gutenberg Block Ecosystem Evolves With AI Integration

Gutenberg blocks form the foundation of modern WordPress websites, making Telex’s AI generation capabilities particularly significant. These modular components handle everything from text and images to complex interactive elements.

Current WordPress users already benefit from various AI-enhanced block plugins. However, Telex promises native AI integration directly from WordPress, potentially reducing dependence on third-party solutions.

The tool’s experimental status suggests WordPress is testing market response before full deployment. User feedback during this testing phase will likely influence Telex’s final feature set and release timeline.

Legal Disputes Don’t Derail AI Development

Mullenweg briefly addressed ongoing legal proceedings with hosting provider WP Engine during his presentation. The dispute centers on trademark licensing and contribution expectations, with WordPress alleging insufficient community contribution.

“The quick update is, it’s working its way through the legal system. We trust in the fairness of the courts,” Mullenweg commented, indicating confidence in judicial resolution.

The legal situation hasn’t slowed WordPress’s AI development initiatives. The company continues investing in AI capabilities while managing external disputes through appropriate legal channels.

Future of WordPress AI Development Shows Promise

The experimental tool provides a glimpse into future possibilities for AI-powered content creation within the WordPress ecosystem.

WordPress’s large user base offers significant testing and feedback opportunities for AI tool refinement. Community input will shape Telex’s evolution from experimental prototype to production-ready feature.

The company’s measured approach to AI deployment suggests careful consideration of user needs and technical stability. This methodical development strategy may produce more reliable tools than rushed AI implementations from competitors.
