MEST Africa Challenge 2025 Opens Applications

Applications are open for the MEST Africa Challenge 2025, a pan-African pitch competition led by MEST Africa and powered by Absa. The 2025 edition narrows its focus to fintech and adjacent value-chain solutions. The competition offers early-stage founders a platform to win equity funding, secure pilots with corporate partners and join the MEST portfolio.

What the Challenge offers

The grand prize is a US$50,000 equity investment for the overall winner. Finalists also gain access to MEST’s network, one-year professional coaching, and opportunities to pilot with Absa business units and other partners. Finalists’ travel and accommodation for the Demo Day in Cape Town will be sponsored.

This year’s focus

MAC 2025 is dedicated to fintech and high-value value chains that deepen financial inclusion. The thematic areas include smart credit and alternative lending, fraud and trust tech, next-gen payments and wallets, personalised money operating systems, offline-friendly rails, agri-tech engines tied to finance, investment gateways, and other solutions that enhance trade and cross-border commerce. The partnership with Absa aligns the challenge to markets where the bank operates.

Who should apply

MEST invites early- to growth-stage tech startups that meet the following criteria:

  • Operate in at least one of Absa’s priority markets: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Uganda or Zambia.
  • Have been operating for three years or less.
  • Have at least six months of recurring revenue and a minimum monthly recurring revenue (MRR) of US$5,000.
  • Have raised no more than US$1 million in cumulative funding.
  • Have at least two founding team members and be able to pitch in English.
  • Registration in a neutral jurisdiction or Delaware C-corp is preferred but not mandatory.

Key dates and process

  • Applications open: 4 August 2025
  • Applications close: 26 September 2025
  • Top 20 announced: 10 October 2025
  • Virtual semi-finals: Week of 27 October 2025
  • Final Demo Day (in-person): Week of 24 November 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa

The selection process includes an online application with a short video pitch, a virtual semi-final stage and an in-person final for the top ten startups.

Why it matters for African founders

The MAC offers capital and market access in one package. The Absa partnership gives fintech founders a concrete pathway to commercial pilots in real markets. Winning or reaching the finals brings regional visibility. For founders targeting financial services, the competition is both a validation and a fast-track to corporate partnerships.

How to apply

MEST hosts the MAC application and directs applicants to the application portal. Startups should prepare a concise online form, supporting documents and a maximum three-minute video pitch in which a founder appears on camera. Video production quality is not scored; clarity of the pitch is paramount.

Practical tips for applicants

  • Keep the problem and solution clear. State traction in numbers.
  • Show why the team can execute. List relevant metrics.
  • Demonstrate market fit in at least one eligible country.
  • Make the three-minute pitch focused and person-led. Appear on camera and be concise.
  • Highlight regulatory readiness for fintech pilots and any compliance measures already in place.

Track record

The MEST Africa Challenge has built a credible track record. The 2024 winner, SAYeTECH of Ghana, won US$50,000 and used the momentum to scale its agritech offering. The MAC has consistently provided winners with funding, mentorship and access to investor networks.

Bottom line: The MEST Africa Challenge 2025 is a sector-focused chance for fintech founders in key African markets to secure equity funding, piloting opportunities and regional exposure. Applications close on 26 September 2025; early, clear submissions that demonstrate traction and market fit stand the best chance of progressing.
