UNILAG Best Graduating Student Samuel Badekale Wins EU-Funded Erasmus Scholarship

Samuel Akinade Badekale emerged as one of the standout graduates from the 2023/2024 academic session at the University of Lagos, securing both the Best Graduating Student in Sciences and Overall Best Graduating Student titles with a flawless 5.00 CGPA in Cell Biology and Genetics. This rare feat reflects not only intellectual brilliance but unwavering determination and discipline across all four levels of his undergraduate program.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

While academic success characterized much of Samuel’s university life, he also:

  • Co-founded the Students Mental Health Advocates (SMHA) to champion student well-being, collaborating with UNILAG’s counseling unit on outreach efforts.
  • Revived his department’s yearbook, Bioscope, raising half of its production budget through sponsorships and serving as Editor-in-Chief.
  • Acted as coach for his departmental football team, leading them to victory in both the HOD Cup and the All-Star Cup.
  • Founded the SkillUp Initiative in Mushin, teaching digital skills to youth in underserved communities and distributing textbooks to 82 students.
  • Launched TEDxIdiAraba (2025) to inspire his community through stories of resilience and innovation.

Recognition and Honor

Samuel’s achievements did not go unnoticed:

  • Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun appointed him (alongside co-top graduate Haroun Adebakin) as Education Ambassadors of the state and presented each with ₦10 million in recognition of their excellence.
  • Student bodies like NANS and NAOSS lauded the governor’s gesture, emphasizing its motivational impact for youth across the region.

A European Chapter: Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship

Taking his academic journey global, Samuel secured an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarship, becoming the only Nigerian and West African selected for the program in 2025. Over the next two years, he’ll study across three top European institutions:

  • Université Côte d’Azur, France
  • University of Genoa, Italy
  • University of Osnabrück, Germany

He will explore Membrane Biology, Neuroscience, and Experimental Medicine, positioning himself at the forefront of multidisciplinary research.

On social media, Samuel shared:

“2025 has been amazing in every way! Pleased to announce the next step in my journey: selected as the only Nigerian & West African for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Biomembranes…”

Final Thoughts

Samuel Badekale’s journey from Mushin to UNILAG’s top graduate(then onward to European universities) is a powerful reminder that excellence knows no boundaries. His balanced approach, combining academic rigor with leadership, community service, and holistic health advocacy, sets a golden standard for young academics across Africa and beyond.

As he embarks on this exciting European chapter, we look forward to seeing his contributions to science, education, and global healthcare, especially in areas like sickle cell disease, which deeply impact communities like his own.
