Kenya is now the best country in Africa when it comes to ICT rules and laws. This news comes from a big United Nations group that checks how well countries manage their technology rules.

What the UN Found

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) gave Kenya 93 points out of 100 in their 2024 ICT Regulatory Tracker. This is better than Kenya’s score of 92 points in 2023.

Kenya beat other big African countries:

  • Nigeria came second with 92 points
  • South Africa was third with 88 points
  • Other top 10 countries include Malawi, Egypt, Rwanda, Morocco, Uganda, Burkina Faso, and Senegal

Around the world, Kenya ranked 20th out of 194 countries. Italy got the top spot with 100 points, followed by Lithuania with 99.5 points.

Why Kenya Won

The UN group looked at four main things:

  • How the country’s tech regulator works
  • What powers the regulator has
  • The rules that exist now
  • How well companies compete with each other

Kenya got the highest level rating called “G4” (fourth generation). This means Kenya has very good and fair ICT rules that help new ideas grow while keeping things affordable for people.

What Kenya’s Leaders Say

Steve Isaboke works for the government in broadcasting and telecommunications. He said: “This ranking shows the excellent work that CA has done in helping Kenya’s digital change and giving digital access to everyone. At 25 years old, CA’s way of making rules has grown up and gotten world recognition.”

David Mugonyi, who leads the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), was happy about the news. He said it comes at a good time because CA will celebrate its 25th birthday next month.

Kenya’s Digital Success Story

Kenya’s good ICT rules have helped the country in many ways:

Better Internet Access: More people across Kenya can now get online and use digital services.

Business Growth: Companies can offer ICT services more easily, giving people more choices.

Economic Impact: Kenya’s digital economy will add 662 billion shillings to the country’s GDP by 2028, according to recent studies.

Job Creation: Digital growth could create 300,000 new jobs in Kenya.

How Kenya Compares to Other Countries

Kenya’s success puts it ahead of much bigger economies. The country has worked hard to create rules that:

  • Help new technology companies start and grow
  • Make sure people can afford digital services
  • Keep competition fair between companies
  • Protect consumers who use digital services

What This Means for Africa

Kenya’s top ranking shows that African countries can lead in technology rules. Other African nations are also doing well.

Nigeria and South Africa are close behind Kenya. Countries like Rwanda and Morocco are also making good progress in creating better ICT rules.

This success helps Africa compete better with other parts of the world in the digital economy.

The Future

The Communications Authority of Kenya has big plans. They recently launched a 40 billion shilling Universal Service Fund Strategy. This money will help more people get access to digital services, especially in rural areas.

Kenya’s success comes from years of smart planning. The country removed rules that made it hard for foreign technology companies to work there. This helped bring in more investment and new ideas.

As Kenya celebrates 25 years of the Communications Authority, the country is well-placed to keep leading Africa in digital technology and ICT rules.
